Bruce Dickinson is 61 and Rob Halford is 68. Everyone is obviously different, but, I find this to be a bit of a weak excuse.

I read someone on here the other day say that this is a result of Ed "going for it" for the past twenty-nine years. Look, I'm eternally grateful for everything he has provided me, but, there are many other singers who also have spent their careers "going for it" and simply haven't deteriorated to the same degree.
Thom Yorke is 51, and while he might not reach the heights he once did, I just don't believe that the band needs to consider working around his limitations when coming up with new material. Black Francis still sounds phenomenal live. His vocal choices on the new record are very clearly artistic.

To be fair, this could be worse, right? Ed could be Bono or Axl Rose

Yeah... I can’t support those comparisons at all. Smoking/Alcohol aside, Ed was lucky to have a voice at all after the 93/94 tours alone.

Why not? Ed doesn't exist in a vacuum. My point is that he could have been far more proactive in properly caring for his voice.

Geddy Lee is actually a great example here. He sounded horrific on the Clockwork Angels tour, and he knew it. Changed up his diet and exercise regimen, and came back for the R40 run completely re-invigorated & committed. He recognized an issue with his instrument and did everything he could to rectify the issues he was having.

I saw Rush on that tour (and a number of others) and can confirm he sounded bad. Now, a huge difference is that for a live Rush show, Getty’s singing is almost superfluous. They were still awesome because of the nature of the band and the songs. PJ has always been highly reliant on Ed’s singing for better or worse.

It was just bathtime for my 16-month-old, and he's been bopping his head to this song the past couple of mornings. I put it on again and heard my wife react to him start some clapping along and said, "New Pearl Jam, he's been enjoying it." Halfway through the song she says, "This is good, I like it."
