This album is not going to be a major departure as some of us thought after hearing Dance.

well, i don't know what your thoughts on it are, but a couple friends and i agree that, for example, Infallible sounds much better live than on the record. maybe given the prickly relationship i have with DOTC illustrates why i personally feel that way but Infallible feels a bit heavier (not just guitar wise). it feels like it has a little more umph to it. to a lesser extent in the same way the modern live version of No Way does. so perhaps the more electronic centric songs on this record will find a more organic balance in the live setting. plus if Klinghoffer actually is going to chime in here or there we could see something quite interesting.

Who the fuck cares about the live setting? How many times do you see PJ live vs. how many times do you listen to the song on the album? How the hell does Infallible sound heavier than this song? Infallible sounds like a pansy ass motherfucker next to DOTC.

jesus christ. i was comparing Infallible studio to Infallible live - it sounds better live, like there's more life to it. it's got a sturdy, heft to it that's not on the recording. also, i listen to a live concert about 5x as much as i listen to the studio records. so i care a lot how it translates to the live show. this is a live band; i don't think anyone has ever successfully argued the other way around. there's a reason they've released every concert as an official bootleg for 19 years - because they're an incredible live band that people love to see where every song is elevated.

i'm not trying to gang up here cuz i hate that shit, just giving my honest opinion.

the times i heard infallible live it absolutely brought the show to a halt. there's not enough there there, unfortunately.

and, like it or not, the studio recording is the eternal document. i want that to be as ambitious and unhindered as humanly possible. imagine if we didn't get sgt. pepper's b/c the beatles were worried about how A Day In The Life would translate live without the orchestra. there are more than enough songs out there to play live. go for the throat and get it right in the studio, using everything at your disposal. the rest is gravy.

I used to post here in the mid-00s, and this board was super important to how I discovered new music throughout that decade. I don't think I posted at all in the 2010s though, so it's great to be sufficiently excited by something that the band has released that I want to post again. I know this just echoes what so many other have said, but I really didn't think the band had anything as out of their comfort zone as DOTC left in them.

Stone's comments about the rest of Gigaton have me a bit worried, but I'm hoping that we're supposed to interpret his quote as three things (some variety, some straightforward rockers, and some ballads) rather than two (variety consisting of straightforward rockers and ballads). Somehow it doesn't make sense to me that the band would realize that it's a good idea to keep "Can't Deny Me" off the album and also realize that DOTC is a compelling first single, but then go ahead and fill the rest of the album with generic short punkish rock songs anyway.

As someone who got Cropduster in five straight shows in 2003 I can absolutely say that is the ultimate show stopper. And I like the song.

Infallible just sucks live.

Dance of the Clairvoyants works because it's a strong song with good ideas which they committed to, not because it's weird or unusual.

I don't know, I think it's both. The whole thing certainly falls apart if there's not a strong song at the core, but I do think at least part of why this song not only works but feels exciting is because it explores an aesthetic realm that isn't completely tiresome to us. Which isn't to say it's weird (how weird can it be if it borrows from a bunch of familiar aesthetic sources which we all immediately recognized?), but part of why this song feels so engaging (to me, anyway) is because my brain isn't automatically white-noising all the parts of the song that would traditionally comprise my schema for what Pearl Jam are supposed to sound like. Again, to your point, you could probably say the same thing about "Turning Mist," so clearly the mere quality of being an outlier is not sufficient in itself, but I think that element of side-step was absolutely necessary for them at this point. As much as we all say, "I just want good songs," I don't think this song -- even if the delivery and performance quality were the same -- would have been nearly as satisfying if not for some of its purely novel, superficial elements.

Crop-duster isn't that good of a song in general (though i didn't think it was bad in Seattle two years ago. but i'm not arguing that Infallible is great (i don't think it is). i just think it comes across better live. the fact that it stops a setlist has more to do with the song in general because even a better version of it still isn't as good as the usual suspects live.

Yikes. I imagine the mid-2000s is when that guy (BOB) lost the plot. He’s worked with so many shitty bands and artists (not including the boss here), it’s a little surprising that PJ has so consistently worked with him over 30 years, almost as a sixth member. Whatever the reason, I’m thankful for the break. This should hopefully be the first nice sounding album since RA.
