I just remembered ... actually split it up over 2 nights. Too tired to finish on Weds night so only watched half, then finished Thurs.tragabigzanda wrote:you got one hour and 55 minutes away from the twins and you watched Crash?

Captain Marvel
It’s ok. Feels like the story was forced into the overall Avengers arc, but I didn’t read the comic so I don’t know how close it is. Also the 90s references were a bit much.

Zombieland 2
Funnier than expected, though some of the best parts are spoiled in the trailer.

Weird Science
There truly is no other kind of movie as warped and nauseating as ‘80s comedies. Almost every new one I see brings fresh horrors.

Serenity is pretty flaccid. It's uneven but it's not anywhere near the "worst thing ever made" like the general discussion had led me to believe. I wish it had committed fully to being weird. It holds back too much. I wanted it to be more like Brick in a way -- a self-aware noir of a different color. The scenes where they lean hard into the absurdity of it all, and try to use a unique vernacular are the scenes that work the best.VinylGuy wrote:so? tell us your thoughts.durdencommatyler wrote:Watched Under the Silver Lake and Serenity (2019) over the weekend.
Under The Silver Lake is a fascinating film. Andrew Garfield is such a force. He's right up there with Driver as being among the best of their generation. The man is fucking riveting to watch. I'm still thinking through the movie and whether or not it totally works for me. But I really liked it, I think. I may end up loving it. But I have to work through what I think the movie is about at its core first. It feels like the movie is biting off a lot and I'm still torn on whether or not it's too much. I also wanted it to be weirder and a little more tense sometimes. Also, Jimmi Simpson should be in everything.

Good. I saw Serenity on a plane...im not sure if they did that movie actually believing the script was good. Its such a weird experience.durdencommatyler wrote:Serenity is pretty flaccid. Under The Silver Lake is an absolute masterpiece. I think its the best movie out there talking about male toxic behaviour.

Re: What movies are you watching?
That's the big thing that I'm still wrestling with. At times it really feels like it's talking about toxic masculinity in an interesting way and other times it feels a bit icky in the wrong way. But I had the same issue with Mad Men when it first started and it's now my all time favorite TV show. So, it's possible that you're right and it's handling this stuff in an interesting and valuable way and I'm over thinking things.VinylGuy wrote:Good. The only times I've heard about Serenity are from How Did This Get Made? and another podcast where they watch crap movies.
And here.
