Yep. Retrograde sounds like the end of better days. And the ending is awesome. That’s the comparison that came to mind. Is it exact? Nah. But it’s got that soaring thing down.
Cool! I love the ending of Better Days, and if Retrograde is like that, then I'm excited.

7'Oclock has me the most excited due to the Floyd reference. Does Mike have a solo in this one? Is this a Gilmore type Floyd...or Syd Barrett type Floyd?
I don’t remember. But 7 o’clock was a standout for sure. It was like an amplified fuuuck I’m blanking on the song. It was a riot act b side. You can’t know what it’s liiiiike. To feeeeeel. What is that song?

And again. These song comparisons are all coming from
a PJ nerd. I always enjoy when other people compare to existing songs. So. It’s not exact but it gives you an idea.
Otherside is the B side you're talking about. I like that one. I can imagine it would be pretty hard to remember everything from first listen. Pearl Jam albums always take a few spins before I understand what I'm hearing.

It took me about 3 plays of DOTC before I could form an opinion.

Anyways, thanks for sharing this with us.
Yeah man. I lived for this shit when I was on the other side. Glad I can offer my perspective on a once in a lifetime experience. But the Pearl Jam new album itch is just as strong having heard it. It’s a good one y’all. And can only get better for me.

Beware the overenthusiastic hype from superfans who are coasting off the adrenaline of just having enjoyed privileged access to a special event where they possibly got drunk on tequila with their hero. "Best album since x" is the same hooey that gets thrown around every time any veteran artist releases a new album -- we've all been through this enough times to know not to put any stock in stuff like this.

That said, comparisons are in the eye of the beholder, so I can turn a blind eye to references to "Better Days" and Lightning Bolt. The comment that sticks out for me is the confirmation that "DotC" is anomalous enough to "stick out like a sore thumb." That's disappointing. Certainly the songs themselves will be the final word, but it seems highly unlikely to me that a record comprised of "rock, punk, and Eddie songs like 'Better Days'" is going to be capable of embodying that same spirit that we've all been so captivated by these past few days.
Some might say doors open up to interpretation.
oh you absolute playa.

I don't think anybody thought they would make an entire album of DotC type songs. That would be a disaster. But I'd love it if they captured that mid to fast tempo groove based rock songs with some non-obvious hooks. I doubt that description makes sense to anyone but me, but that is where I think the band shines.

Yeah, I certainly don't need an album of songs that sound like DOTC, but I think the best thing PJ could do would be to release an album of songs sprung from that same kind of adventurousness and enthusiasm.

If I went to this listening party and came back here to discuss I’d be hard pressed to remember anything I’d heard. If what he’s saying is true his memory is impressive.

Generally speaking, these are long songs. If the DOTC approach to writing and crafting pervades the album, that's a lot of time for a lot of great stuff to happen.

If you guys want a comparison of his interpretation. How about we asked him if he could give a review/description of Yield, as if we'd never heard it. And he'd heard it only once.

Guaranteed one Matt song. He didn’t have any credits on LB.

Edit: didn’t have any on S/T either.

The Variety review describes it as their strongest and most diverse collection of songs since Yield. Diverse is good.

Yield is their most consistent album. really great songs equal to each other. they are all solid. (Minus Pilates imho) (not a typo)

Gigaton (on first listen) is like lightning bolt where there are clear stand outs. Binaural was this way too (grievance, insignificance, light years...). Riot act too (LBC, CANT keep, save you, you are)

The album doesn’t sound like lightning bolt. But if I had to associate the sound with a previous album that’s the closest comparison you can get. But it isn’t lightning bolt 2.0

Who Ever Said
Super Blood Wolf Moon
DotC
Seven O’clock
Retrograde
River Cross

Quick escape might end up in that group too.

Those songs all triggered my FUCK I LOVE THIS BAND endorphins. In a way only PJ can do.

The album has a unique sound. It’s specific. It’s layered. Dense. And up front. It does not sound like the last 2 albums. Again Today is a good example of this production. It’s full but not polished. It kind of drenches you with sound. But not in an overproduced way. Eddie sounds phenomenal but specific. He hasn’t sounded like this in the studio before. It’s different. It’s rewarding.

For reference. My favorite bands are Pearl Jam, rAdiohead, the strokes, doves, jimmy eat world and foals.

Fav pj songs RVM, in my tree, I got shit, go, animal, sirens, unthought known, smile, hail hail, LBC, you are, light years, release, grievance.

Least fav. Future days. Can’t deny me (but just on first couple of listens. It grew on me) supersonic.

Thanks for all your writings, kid. It's such a blast hearing a new PJ album for the first time. I had Vitalogy a week before the vinyl was released and I was on cloud nine.

Enjoy the buzz and bring on March 27.
