Comatose is amazing live. Really the only "punk" song they can nail anymore.

Another guy on the Porch who attended the Atmos thing saying the album reminds him most of Binaural, but notes there are a couple big ballads.

This makes me weak in the knees.

Concur, somehow Parting Ways has snuck it's way into my top 5 PJ tunes.

If the song lengths on wiki are true, I'm all for it, especially now that it sounds like the production is miles beyond the last few albums. BS especially and LB felt way too condensed if that makes any sense; no room for any of the songs to breathe for the most part. I get that was kind of the point on BS but I ultimately think that was one of the album's greatest weaknesses.

In defense of Tuolumne, he isn't talking about people being dissatisfied or critical as much as the relentless negativity and viciousness -which maybe was playful to some people but made it really difficult to actually enjoy the music for others. It's one of the reasons I walked away. There was no music coming and I was tired of just listening to people shit on stuff I cared about. There is enough of that in the rest of the world, and I don't need it in my escapes.

Maybe I'm just reading my own experience into his comment.

Also, a number of people here have experience with mixing, mastering, recording, of music and all that goes into it. Its fasincating to hear there thoughts on recent releases pearl jam have done and why many people feel distant to modern day pearl jam and how it relates to some of these studio techniques.

If I could write it in a single sentence, I'd say that Gigaton has the majesty of Ten, the aggressiveness of Vs, the intensity of Vitalogy, the rawness of Merkinball, the eccentricity of No Code, the warmth of Yield, the darkness of Binaural, the cynicism of Riot Act, the toughness of S/T, the lightness of Backspacer and the world-weariness of Lightning Bolt. This is Pearl Jam as you've always known...but also Pearl Jam reborn.

To quote Ed at the press conference - "we had to go away and dream it all up again."

I like the idea of the long songs on gigaton but I'm still going to post this fearful venting. 2 songs in, dotc & river cross. I like both. knew what river cross was like b4 hearing it & didnt think id like it but i do. Gigaton is supposed to be kinda ballad heavy. So for me, how good the album will be comes down to whether or not ed can still pull off ballads pretty well 7 yrs after LB. I noticed a few pronunciation errors in dotc but it didnt tarnish the song any for me due to the type of song, unlike on a couple ballads off backspacer. I liked all of LB though.

From what I can interpret from these descriptions, I feel like the song variety and the possibly more layered work could make it fall into an attempt at Yield/Binaural territory.

And, I feel fortunate they're still around. It is very rare to have band situations where people are even around, together, and alive much less have an opportunity to put out a song like DoTC.

Some of the fan entitlement over the last 15 years, as if the band is required a certain level of customer service in terms of creative approach, is nauseating to me. I want them to make something that represents where they are spiritually at as accurately as possible. Whatever that is. If they can accomplish that to a successful degree, then it's good art to follow. The whole idea of people wanting specific tempos, styles, lyrics, and technical approaches, is a fanbase that has lost it's way more than the band themselves. They are not a fuckin jukebox.

I’m not sure why you have such a problem with fans - who love the band - discuss things they love most about the band and would like to see from them. This is the internet and a message board devoted to the band for discussions about the band. If we took your approach of “whatever they give is fine” then this board would cease to exist. Also I don’t think you really understand much of how this board interacts.

I was on the pre-historic nucleus of this board going way back to 1999-2000. Twenty fuckin years, so please save any 'new guys don't get this place' BS. I had a role in the earliest intelligent deep dive conversations that this board was about. It's gone to shit and I have every right to bitch about it. Lots of people like me have walked away, leaving this toilet bowl that always had so much potential. It's why I revisit every so often, to see if there is some life still left in here. It's probably better to just leave the same 20 people to circle jerk and prejudge their way into hating the next album after they've had 4 months to kick it around.

Just engage and post about the music? I've tried that, but it gets followed up w/ 5 pages of snark that people who think they own this place believe is really charming (again, I was around these parts 20 years ago, if it's meant to be humorous and fails on any kind of comedic level). It's toxic, and I wish this place could help me enjoy the musical journey but that's probably wishful thinking. I'm pretty much right where Stip is, and I doubt I'll be able to experience Gigaton in any meaningful way here.

This had me thinking......Who is the board's longest active member? Peeps, me, Stip, Tuolumne? I recall the two crashes prior to the '04 crash and the data was lost, but was still curious if a data scientist (or climatologist) could find out. Thx.

interesting point. i remember the crash as well as i posted here (under the same handle) back in 2002-2004 and post crash consistently up until 2008. had great discussions and obviously it was a different time because the internet was a different beast. i may only have like 75 posts now but at the time i was on all the time.

remember the covers challenge? i recorded probably 10 PJ songs sometimes with other posters for those tournaments. Badabing, Left_Circles....hell, one of our posters created the PJ Stat Tracker app! and i still use it (and it does get updated!). those were good times. hell there was even a non-PJ covers tournament where 4 or 5 of us collaborated on an Alice in Chains cover. i still have all those songs.

my point is - i agree with Toulumne that there was something different back then. i love me some snark but it can feel like a boys' club sometimes.

You have to remember that for the past 10 years or so it's been three same 30 people posting here. We've formed a bond because we've stuck around. Many of us have become friends in real life. Hell, my boss is a former rmer. The only time we get new posters or returning original members who didn't stick around but like to come back and announce that they were here at the beginning is when new music comes out.
