DWFB wrote:I like the idea of the long songs on gigaton but I'm still going to post this fearful venting. 2 songs in, dotc & river cross. I like both. knew what river cross was like b4 hearing it & didnt think id like it but i do. Gigaton is supposed to be kinda ballad heavy. So for me, how good the album will be comes down to whether or not ed can still pull off ballads pretty well 7 yrs after LB. I noticed a few pronunciation errors in dotc but it didnt tarnish the song any for me due to the type of song, unlike on a couple ballads off backspacer. I liked all of LB though.
I don't think the bold part is true.

Who Ever Said - rocker
Superblood Wolfmoon -rocker
DOTC -synth pop
Quick Escape -"lead by a huge Jeff Ament bass groove"
Alright -"builds more slowly atop an uplifting melody," so maybe
Seven O'Clock -"trippy Pink Floyd vibes"
Never Destination -"evokes ... MFC"
Take The Long Way -"a riffy monster"
Buckle Up -"one of the more abstract songs"
Comes Then Goes -"Pete Townshend-worthy acoustic guitar aggression"
Retrograde -"reminiscent of 2010-era Pearl Jam singles such as 'Just Breathe' and 'Sirens'"
River Cross -"recalls Peter Gabriel-era Genesis songs such as 'Carpet Crawlers' in its simmering intensity"

So depending on what Alright turns out to be, it looks like we're gettin 2-3 ballads. And of River Cross is produced like The Carpet Crawlers, thast could be pretty great. Retrograde is the only one I'm worried about at this point.

Good post. Thanks. Its going to be a long wait.
I pledge to be 100% boring and never troll-out again. I will make my interactions here pleasant, like sitting through an agricultural economics class.

given there has been so much apparent focus on production values / layering / dolby etc. I just hope that if there is a leak it is really high quality bc this seems like something where a ‘first listen’ would be best executed on a good soundsystem or set of headphones

Back for a technical question:

Let’s assume it is generally agreed that the “best” sound is on vinyl played through a corded connection to good headphones.

If that’s a 10/10 where does wireless connection/bluetooth from an iPhone to good headphones rank?

You know some over-the-top fan who very much can’t afford to is going to invest in some home Dolby Atmos system just for this album

If past PJ albums are any indication, vinyl would be around a 6/10 (basically same as cd)

I've been looking to upgrade my audio system anyway as it's from about 10 or so years ago, but I'm not looking at the upgrade just for this album.

I'd like some more detailed impressions. WTF is Quick Escape, Alright, Comes Then Goes all about? Barely any details on those

I wanted to hear what a kalimba sounds like before hearing it on River Cross, so I found an album called Music for Pregnant Yoga Exercises. Good shit.
