As much as it pains me to say it about a Crazy Horse album, I'm struggling to get into Colorado.

I absolutely loved Americana and Psychedelic Pill, as albums unto themselves but also for the kind of "centering" effect they had on Neil's career -- he felt like he had been off in the wilderness for a while at the time, and those albums really brought it all back home for me and ended up buoying the stuff around it. This album isn't doing the same thing -- there are some nice moments, but overall it feels like the kind of artless, blunt, hyper-literal songwriting approach he took on Living With War and The Monsanto Years is becoming his default mode. Feels a little sad.

The new album just finished playing, and the next video in the queue is "Cortez the Killer" from Weld. I think I'm having a "don't you what you got till it's gone" moment with Poncho right now.

Colorado has definitely grown on me. In some ways there's too much straightforward acoustic/piano stuff for it to really register as a Crazy Horse album, but once you look past that, all the elements are there. I really like "Milky Way" a lot.

I couldn’t figure out if it was reggae or an attempt at some sort of Latin influence. The vocal delivery kind of sounds reggae like (mostly because he ends each clause with a “mon”), but the guitar parts don’t really mimic reggae, they just sort of stutter (which sounds kinda cool actually).

That was an attempt at reggae I believe.

I always thought it was a historically inaccurate take on the indigenous people describing the arrival of Cortez to the Caribbean Islands. Or possibly a more modern Jamaican describing it. Regardless, the guitar playing on that version is so great. So much energy on that rust tour.

I am going to step away from the unadulterated love of Neil Young to say this: how on earth did he waste the Promise of the Real over something like 3 albums with just not good stuff. I actually listened a bit on my commute today to Lukas Nelson and Promise of the Real because they are coming to Port Chester and I was considering getting the tickets ($30 seems quite reasonable). I listened to their 2010 EP and a Spotify Sampler and thought both were really good. C’mon Neil! Either way I think I will spring for those tickets but I can’t believe how good they sound and how poorly Neil utilizes them.

In the studio, yeah. I haven't really dug any of those records. But live, I think they're a good band for Neil. He really seems to enjoy playing with them and the few times I've seen them (shit, it might of been just once) they put on a hell of show. My biggest gripe with the REAL is the percussion, I can't get over the bongos or whatever that shit is. I did enjoy that EARTH record though.

They’re a great band for Neil. They’re like a mix of all the bands he’s played with. Super loose raw and aggressive, yet a touch of the country finesse of many of his folkier albums.

The sings he wrote for them are just god awful. But they handle his material so well.

I haven’t seen him live with them so I can accept that. I am mostly bummed that a band this good doesn’t spark Neil’s creative juices in the studio.

I guess I’m in the minority but I can’t stand that band. I’ve seen him with them twice. They sound like an adequate cover band backing him on his old stuff, but they are cringeworthy to watch, like any modern “jam band”. I’ve seen The Horse since then (2018) and while they can’t match the energy of past years, they have groove, soul, and are still punk as fuck. POTR have none of that.
