To be clear, this was never going to end any other way. With or without witnesses and documents.

I had to check the article because people like to make fake quotes as a interpretation of what was said but no, he actually said that.

What's the over/under on the odds Bolton and Mulvany are assassinated if witnesses are allowed?

I think he needs to go to Doug's house and have Alec Baldwin pour him an infinite glass of whiskey.

Re: The 45th POTUS - Donald J. Trump
murkowski’s statement is so pathetic
at least she is honest about it being a partisan processI worked for a fair, honest, and transparent process, modeled after the Clinton trial, to provide ample time for both sides to present their cases, ask thoughtful questions, and determine whether we need more.
The House chose to send articles of impeachment that are rushed and flawed. I carefully considered the need for additional witnesses and documents, to cure the shortcomings of its process, but ultimately decided that I will vote against considering motions to subpoena.
Given the partisan nature of this impeachment from the very beginning and throughout, I have come to the conclusion that there will be no fair trial in the Senate. I don't believe the continuation of this process will change anything. It is sad for me to admit that, as an institution, the Congress has failed.
It has also become clear some of my colleagues intend to further politicize this process, and drag the Supreme Court into the fray, while attacking the Chief Justice. I will not stand for nor support that effort. We have already degraded this institution for partisan political benefit, and I will not enable those who wish to pull down another.
We are sadly at a low point of division in this country.

what I don't get about her statement is that the Republicans control the senate so by saying it's not going to be a fair trial isn't she saying the quiet part out loud...again?

Even if it wasn’t, the hope was that the Senate, which are supposed to be the grown ups by definition of the institution, would have a level of concern that rose to wanting to get all these facts out in the open. Instead, they chose to bury this. And no, it was not on the House to have all the evidence already in a record before presenting it to the Senate. That ignores that if you were a analogize the effect of impeachment, the House process is more akin to an indictment and the Senate the removal trial. Truth is Republicans don’t want to stare the evidence in the face and still be able to say that there’s nothing to see here. Instead, they need to pretend that the whole thing is in essence an abstract fiction of what ifs so they can sell it back home as that.durdencommatyler wrote:To be clear, this was never going to end any other way. Re: The 45th POTUS - Donald J. Trump
This is all such a load of nothing. Republicans voted against witnesses testifying in a performative farce of a trial that would never, ever have ended in removal from office anyway. Now everyone is overreacting with outrage at republicans, and meanwhile the DNC continues its tireless efforts to undermine democracy: https://www.politico.com/news/2020/01/3 ... tes-110083

Except for what it's worth, like it or not political parties are essentially private organizations and can decide their nominating process however they want. This is was a trial of the President in the US Senate where the jurors were essentially able to say "don't show me that it'll make it harder to explain why I didn't convict".

Re: The 45th POTUS - Donald J. Trump
You're right, the DNC wanting to have some influence in making sure an actual Democrat is nominated to represent the Democrats is a much bigger threat to American democracy than the actual US Senate skirting it's Constitutional responsibility to hold the Executive branch accountable.
Don't get me wrong, I think superdelegates are bullshit too but calling it bigger threat to democracy than what is going on in the Senate today is ridiculous. At the very least these shitheads should have had to hear from the relevant witnesses before telling the country that it doesn't matter to them.
