meanwhile Vanilla Ice may have done the reverse

i think he formed a hard punk/metal band

although he maintained some sort of HGTV home renovation program as well. but that was actually kind of interesting

David Johansen, previously a punk icon, created the character Buster Poindexter in the late 80's. You may remember the hit Hot, Hot, Hot.

I think this is a balanced and reasonable decision

James were a 4 piece folk band in the 80s. RHCP were very funk/rap before Dave, then heavy including Californication (John) before going softer. Pink Floyd were psychedelic before Dark Side. Charlotte Church had 1 or 2 changes. The Animals sound progressed similar to Floyd especially on the keyboard front. Bob Dylan famously went more electric and bandy. Prodigy were brilliant before Firestarter, in the Outer Space era. I'd say The Who as well, compare My Generation to BO'R.
So basically, Johnson and May spent Trump's presidency fighting each other over how best to sell the NHS to Trump.

Disagree; MV just seems like natural growth to me. They made some real shitty pop after Light Grenades, though.

This is just examples of musical progression, not "big swings for pop stardom".

I was just tossing it out there because they have a new song and it made me wonder.

Also I really like If Not Now, When? because it was exactly what I needed to hear when it was released.

I wouldn't say so. DSOTM was instant success after...have you ever heard of Obscured by Clouds? They went with a load of extra musicians/backing singers straight away after being pretty much members only. Less so James I'll admit, although the original release of Sit Down came in 89. I'll concede RHCP - BSSM was arguably their biggest album and was arguably their last funky album. Agree about the rest too.
