Re: What movies are you watching?
Heat is the most romantic film ever made by Michael Mann, who is one of the most deeply romantic filmmakers who's ever lived. I find it overwhelmingly, achingly beautiful - the loneliness, the longing, the tragedy pulsing beneath everyone in the film makes things deep inside me move every time I watch it.
When Robert De Niro and Amy Brenneman are standing on that balcony at night with LA twinkling below them in the distance like "iridescent algae" as Goldenthal's score quietly hums on the soundtrack...that's pure cinema. That is as good as this art form gets. Poetry, music, painting, everything. That moment is why I love art.
Heat is a perfect film.

Steve Albini wrote:Whenever there's active promotion on the part of somebody else, whenever I see somebody all dolled up for a fancy photograph and someone's handing out flyers or whenever there's active promotion for something like that, as an imposition on my day, I hate all those people and I want them to fail. I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

Cop Land is solid but it's mostly a showcase for a bunch of great actors to work; Mangold is a steady hand behind the camera but he's not much of an artist. I like it but it's nowhere near the same league as Heat or Cruising.tragabigzanda wrote:Let’s not overlook Copland

I can't agree with you there but I respect the opinion. Stallone is so good in that movie (and every movie).tragabigzanda wrote:I agree 100%. But I also think that Stallone’s character in Copland is more interesting than anyone in Heat.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Cop Land is solid but it's mostly a showcase for a bunch of great actors to work; Mangold is a steady hand behind the camera but he's not much of an artist. Heat is one of the best films of that decade. I don’t know how any who likes movies wouldn’t like tcat film.

I’ve got all of them them already, so will watch. Two is not terrible, but easily worse than the first.E.H. Ruddock wrote:Stick with them. 2 wasn't my favorite.Anders wrote:2 Fast 2 Furious

Tokyo Drift was the first FF movie I watched. I gave it a try cause it had the kid from American Gothic in it and I loved that show.
