Would it be worse for this album to be

full of bad songs where they try out new styles, or
full of OK songs in the tried-and-true PJ formula

I’ll take an album of OK songs I guess.

They are 30 year veterans. I think we are past giving participation trophies.

I liked Scream so I'm fully on-board with bag song/new styles.

all I'm asking for at this point is for them to sound like a PJ I recognise, so that I don't have to pick their songs apart to death, I can just press play and be OK with what I'm hearing front to back, with a few spots that make me genuinely excited

The "don't hold us down" part is definitely my least favorite thing about this track. Everything I've heard so far up to that point intrigues me.

If I think it's bad I wouldn't go back to revisit it a year or five from now. Just because they were trying something "new"? New to who? They would probably sound like they were ripping off another band.

S/T, Backspacer and LB were "experiments" - they were just throwaway ones, largely; I'm not excited that "Clairvoyants" experiments, I'm excited because I think it would have sonically fit alongside any song on their middle-period albums
