pure speculation, but "You always said we'd cross that river..." makes me think that maybe he's acknowledging the he and Chris had some sort of falling out -- maybe around his divorce/remarriage -- and that they'll never get a chance to mend the split.
Okay, but, like, the actual words “River” and “Cross” in that order...that doesn’t mean anything? Like it doesn’t even make sense.
"river cross" is like "nature walk", "mountain hike" or even "ocean cruise"

it makes sense but uses the "noun-verb" construct to mean e.g. "the action of crossing a river" or "the time we crossed the river (set out on a river cross)"
It's awkward-sounding because "a walk", "a hike" and "a cruise" are things. They exist as nouns.

"A cross" exists as a noun but it means one of these ┼

I hear you, it's giving the word a noun function it doesn't usually have

"Brain of J" always kind of annoyed me as a title, it's just Ed trying to be weird

I guess "motor cross" is a noun, a type of cross country bike race, but I'm not sure if river boat discourse (lol) uses it that way

Listened to the ad spot again. Seems like it's a mashup of at least two different points in the song.

You all need to simply admit that the title is meaningless and Ed is a fraud, and possibly illiterate.

I tried reading the lyrics, and it’s difficult for me to see anything about Chris Cornell there.

yup noticed that too, there seems to be a new organ melody part that I don't hear in the live version, and then they cut to a part near the end of the live version with the vocals.

Maybe “cross” is a noun here, and the title is referring to a cross in a river.

Thoughts on lyrics:

I always start across that river
you're the sight distant now

-> You are a figure on the other side of the riverbank. I am crossing to meet you there

As I got close it turned and widened
rising now fading out

-> As I crossed it became difficult

Oh drifting off in the undertow
Can't spot a figure on dry land

-> I am swept into the current now and cannot see you on the river bank

After thoughts of safety
when in truth none to be had
None to be had

-> I fear for my safety as the current takes me away

I used to tell time by my shadow
Til' thunder clouds they took a stage

-> Things used to be good and somewhat carefree, then they got more difficult

The days will end as do the lights raise
Now read of the same page

-> The sun will set (sadness) and the sun will rise (happiness)

Wide awake through this deepest night
Still waiting on the sun

-> I mourn your loss in the sadness of night

As the hours seem to multiply
Find me a star to soldier on

->I try to find hope as this endless night carrie on

Only then beneath the lion's paw
Knowing nothing can be tamed
can be tamed

-> I feel powerless under the weight of this sadness

Don't hold me down
Don't hold me down
Don't hold me down
Don't hold us down
Don't hold me down

-> I can't let this sadness hold me down

Share the light
don't hold us down
Share the light
don't hold us down
Share the light
don't hold us down

-> We need to find happiness again

Share the light
don't hold us down
Share the light
don't hold us down
Share the light
don't hold us down, down

Don't hold us down
Don't hold us down
hold us down
