Ancient History is so rad!

Post by E.H. Ruddock »

This may end up being a thread that no one but me posts in, but I am a big fan of learning about ancient civilizations. So, in the spirit of other topical threads, I'll post interesting articles in here that may or may not spark discussion.

I read this today and thought it was pretty cool.
This 7,000-year-old well is the oldest wooden structure ever discovered, archaeologists say

anything preceding 1975 qualifies, I think.

Well, my interest is generally "BCE", but ancient history is defined as up to around 500 AD. I also like Viking history, which is a little later. So lets start with anything pre-1000 AD and go from there?

I'm trying to educate myself more on Mesopotamia, Phoenecia, Indus Valley, and some of the central/south american civilizations.

i love this thread idea. and i love history in general, but more specifically roman antiquity and the dark ages. it's really fascinating to put into context and understand exactly how we got to now.

i have managed to get through about 2/3 of The Gallic Wars by Julius Caesar. It's fun to read, having traveled around Europe and trying to put 'faces to the names' of the cultures and tribes and landmarks ... as i've been going through i've been googling the location names to see where they are in modern Europe, and visualizing places I've been. Very interesting too if you've ever been to Rome and learned about Roman artillery / military methods / engines of war. They were very sophisticated for their time. But these stories basically set the foundations for modern europe. Some places had devloped social arrangements, and some were just villages with people who barely did shit. Some of the descriptions of the german tribes are particularly hilarious. Obviously the narrator taking license as the victor... highly recommend

Big fan of ancient history.

1. Rome
2. Greece
3. Byzantine

I would next say the Early Middle Ages, if that counts as part of this topic.

Also, The History of Rome podcast by Mike Duncan is amazing. It’s over 10 years old now. He followed that up a few years later with the Byzantine one.

A little far-fetched but still kind of interesting and thought provoking.
