3 and 4 are definitely the low point of the franchise IMO
Good to know. I think the first twenty minutes of this was better than the start of the previous movie.

What did you think of it?

2 is a totally ridiculous and over the top buddy cop action movie, while 3 is much more reserved and realistic - it's basically a drama. I appreciate what Lin tried to do with 3 but it just doesn't work for me.

I barely remember it. I think Fast Five was the only one I really liked. Don't get me wrong I've had fun with the others but I legit liked 5.

watched Mandy last night. I think you have to be in a certain frame of mind to fully appreciate it. it was kind of like watching Bubba Ho-Tep, if that makes sense? I mean there's a certain history of the director and main actor that you can appreciate and then suddenly there's...this.

The first half is setting up the crazy shit that's going down and then at ~1:00:00 it goes to hell. just not literally, which is a shame. Bill Duke from Predator/Commando shows up and does an info dump that negates the weird shit entirely. there's a magic rock flute that calls some demons from hell but (here's the not literally part) ol' Bill there goes and tells you that it's all just bad acid. that's it. not really demons, just tripping (hill)billies. so is the magic rock flute even magical? who knows! I honestly would have appreciated it more if they were demons. I mean I get that the message is that humans are monsters already (the weird as fuck metal dick scene, for example) but the messaging around the flick to me was a demon story, not a weird hippy-dippy sex cult.

the movie jumps from looking amazing to being something out of a bad 80's flick. the problem is that it doesn't look like a bad 80's flick at any point other than the effects so seeing that in HD is jarring. For example, the close-up scenes that they use some weird halloween store (think Spirit) lighting effect just looks way out of place. I know it's a feature and not a bug but it just didn't do it for me.

also you get some full frontal Linus Roache so that's a thing if you were missing it in your life.

2 was a lot more fun. 3 had a decent start, but got boring by the end.

Descendants 3

I appreciate the lengths the director went to in order to avoid sexualizing the characters. Mal’s ass zipper kinda cancels it all out, but still.

how did you get to three. did you watch two. what possessed you (and I mean that in the literal sense of demonic possession) to keep going after watching one.

My 8 y.o. and her friends are still obsessed with it and she likes that she can explain all the characters and plot points to me

Ah. we watched the first one because it was around the time of Once Upon a Time and I thought it was an interesting premise.

She's 8, you say. You should check out The Kingdom Keepers and see if you think she's the right age for it. It's almost Kingdom Hearts but set in the actual parks. You might read it to her at first and see if it's interesting for her. I tried but it was just too 'little' for my son.

So far:
1
2
4
3

2 is funnier than 4, but felt a bit sloppy. 4 was a well oiled machine, but never reached the heights of 1, or the humor of 2. 3 had a great start, but got boring.

Fuck yeah. 5 is a game changer and it’s (mostly) smooth sailing from then on.
