Re: Post-Riot Act Moneygrab
we haven't had an influx of commercial bullshit yet; I don't care about the commercial, the jet thing upsets me, hopefully we don't hear the tour is sponsored by McDonald's

No ones asking for him to be 'cancelled', as the kids say. But I can see in the near future when taking a private jet will be seen as an automatic 'cancelling' ... And fair enough, like I said, especially when ordinary folk are being asked to curb their habits. People taking the piss taking private jets and preaching about the environment.Strat wrote:i think we should all take to twitter and make sure ed loses his job and feels shame

I would have no qualms about people cancelling Ed, I just don't think they care enough anymore

as if the millions of dollars eddie and pearl jam have donated to all of the causes they care about matter nothing because ed played a private jet company gig for a reason unknown to us.
Guys, its not that its not weird, its just that...this conversation has been beaten to death ever since they went back to ticketmaster 25 years ago.

I just don't have the energy to care about these things as much anymore. It's disappointing on some level, but everyone's a hypocrite when they reach a certain level of success (or even before that). The band still uses their celebrity to do a ton or really great stuff.

It's more interesting and annoying that they thought getaway was a good song to put on an album and attempt live like 3 times

So many false equivalencies going on here I can't keep up.
Signing with a major label to have your art distributed to as many ears as possible and going with ticketmaster so those people can go see your show and be safe etc. Is vastly different to taking private jets and playing shows for the private jet execs, especially when you're number one cause is (supposedly) the environment.
I'm still going to see them in my town, New York. And will still listen to the album. This is just weird. And I think it's a reasonable question to ask him how he squares both actions.

Re: Post-Riot Act Moneygrab
Are we so sure that this whole album will be about climate change? Just because of the cover art and title?
Binaural wasn’t about space, or infinity, or the complete nothingness of the human race. The closest we got on that album was a song titled “insignificance”. “Sleight of Hand” touched on the theme, but at a personal level.
I guess the closest an album cover or art concept was represented in a song was Yield and “Do the Evolution”?
PJ artwork to me has always stood on its own, away from the songs. It’s never been a representative of the songs, but more of a visual “song” in its own right. Could there be songs on this album about people fucking up the earth? Sure. But if it’s a collection of songs not about that, and the closest we get is DOTC, this just seems par for the course and a continuing pattern from previous albums.

Comparing climate change with Ticketmaster's business practices seems a little off.Ms Harmless wrote:I agreeStrat wrote:as if the millions of dollars eddie and pearl jam have donated to all of the causes they care about matter nothing because ed played a private jet company gig for a reason unknown to us.

Do you want them to take a bike to each tour stop?Steve Ducka7 wrote:So many false equivalencies going on here I can't keep up.

Doesn't the band also purchase Carbon Offsets, or whatever they are called, to account for their travel? At least they used to.Monkey_Driven wrote:Do you want them to take a bike to each tour stop?Steve Ducka7 wrote:So many false equivalencies going on here I can't keep up.

Regarding playing the private gigs, I think it is a fair assumption that Eddie/Pearl Jam are getting something more than money out of it, such as a large donation to a charity or something similar. Otherwise, it makes no sense for him to play a small, one hour show on the other side of the country. Granted, we don't know this is the case, and maybe he is just doing it for an easy pay day. But if he does play these shows for the benefit of others rather than himself, I would argue this is a much better use of their celebrity in advocating for causes than 25 years ago when they would just protest and attempt to raise awareness.
The band has always donated money to causes, with added on ticket fees to go to charities. With the massive reduction in shows they play over the past 10+ years, they have to find additional ways to raise that money. If this is how they do it, more power to them.

Where did I suggest that they stop taking planes?Monkey_Driven wrote:Do you want them to take a bike to each tour stop?Steve Ducka7 wrote:So many false equivalencies going on here I can't keep up.

Some of the mental gymnastics here is impressive, BUT BUT BUT charity.
I just think it's incredible that someone who has spent years talking about the environment would take a private jet. And I'm sharing that on a pearl jam message board.

So, you have a problem with him playing an event (for reasons unknown to us) for a private jet company but on the flipside you dont care that they take private jets for their tour?Steve Ducka7 wrote:Where did I suggest that they stop taking planes?Monkey_Driven wrote:Do you want them to take a bike to each tour stop?Steve Ducka7 wrote:So many false equivalencies going on here I can't keep up.

Re: Post-Riot Act Moneygrab
People will always defend stuff like this, so I’m not surprised.
Pearl Jam as a group said they are woking on making their tours carbon neutral. Lots of their work and social media posts/releases to the media etc, go towards helping the environment. It’s very close to Stone’s heart.
Most of us fly, but it’s being a hypocrite about it, that makes is worse.
Pearl Jam; it’s terrible the gigatons of water melting at the south pole because of human made climate change, please all donate, and works towards change.
Ed; that’s some nice private jet money. Yey!

There could have been 25 people on that plane for all we know.
About 20 years ago, I was one of 3 passengers on an entire Delta jet from Seattle to Atlanta. My carbon footprint was YUGE.

They take private jets for their tours? I did not know that. Eddie in his own plane. Jeff in his own. Stone etc.Strat wrote:So, you have a problem with him playing an event (for reasons unknown to us) for a private jet company but on the flipside you dont care that they take private jets for their tour?Steve Ducka7 wrote:Where did I suggest that they stop taking planes?Monkey_Driven wrote:Do you want them to take a bike to each tour stop?Steve Ducka7 wrote:So many false equivalencies going on here I can't keep up.
