I'm not caught up on the thread yet, but carbon footprint stuff aside, wouldn't playing a private event for rich corporate guys be a huge turnoff for basically anyone normal? He doesn't need the money. Why would he want to do this? Are the ten club weirdos so annoying that stuff like this is now preferable?

There’s lots of rich environmental activists out there that preach about people changing how they eat (no meat), how they sort their trash, how they shouldn’t use their fuel car as much. Yet, they themselves fly from city to city on private jets. Worst kind of hypocrites. Worse than Trump, that doesn’t believe in climate change.

DiCaprio comes to mind. Always out on the yacht. If we see Ed on a yacht soon then it's really time to worry.

PJ have never really been anti-capitalist; they've always supported philanthropy and big box charity - the truth is you can't be as rich as they are and be at the absolute forefront of economic change; I saw Ed trying to smash Ticketmaster but never the State

I agree, and I also think fans have often read values into these guys that they may not necessarily hold. To be honest, I very much doubt Ed has a thought-out philosophy on this stuff other than the very broad brush strokes.

None of this stuff bothers me or impacts on how I feel about the band's music.

I found the Target commercial far more objectionable only because the TV ad was way too on the nose and directly used the band's music and performance to promote a particular store. It just seemed cheap.

I should note it is an exciting possibility. It may change the way we think about money-grabbing.

In fact - if it's as you say - perhaps this would represent more of an 'everything-grab'. They don't just want money. They want fame. They want privacy. They want corporate sponsorship. They want street credit. They want celebrity. They want climate activism. They want private jets. They. Want. It. All.

This is all two people’s fault:

1) 1993 Kurt Cobain calling PJ sellouts while he was busy making music videos and playing MTV Live and Loud - but somehow forcing Pearl Jam to be “honest”; and

2) 1995 Eddie Vedder driving around in vans and pretending he was in Fugazi.

A.k.a. Pearl Jam has ALWAYS been a big time rock band, and yes, they took principled stances when appropriate, but otherwise never had a cogent anti-corporate stance other than supporting Ralph Nader in 2000. To think that this loose collection of ideals, mostly related to environmental protection made them the big band equivalent of punk purists is just silliness.

I could be way off here and just wanting something pj related to post about but what if these guys planned from the begining to only take a break from the money grab/media whore thing? What about Stone's statement that cobain put a lot of pressure on them and helped them change their sound? Was it because nirvana was selling a lot of albums and they felt they needed that fanbase to do the same and that cobains criticism of them during interviews could harm sales ? Then maybe they just simply couldnt come up with commercially successful song ideas until recent years.
