I’m gonna give this a listen when it comes. I haven’t listened to STP in a really long time.

I have surprisingly enjoyed the singles so far.
Think I’m going to try being kind to everyone a chance.

On Perdida right now (song, obvs) and it sounds like it was written for a flamenco version of Purple.

100%. Put the two best songs on a real album, and I’d probably love the both, but what a somniferous slog this is. It is remarkable how much he sounds like Scott sometimes, but he doesn’t have Scott’s gift of writing or stealing the perfect melodies.

It sounds like they took 5 albums worth of slow songs and stuck them on one album

Thata what I said about fake sublime bradley and fake layne.. they got the voice down pat but the songs ain't the same quality.. it's good for touring tho I guess

I haven’t listened to these guys in ages so why not resume the good old album journey.

Core - some debuts end up defining a band more or less forever and the path they chart always relates back to that first release. Lord knows Pearl Jam get pegged that way. For better or worse, so do Stone Temple Pilots, and part of that reason is this album’s mega success, but also because this finds STP at their meatiest and busting down the doors to proclaim their arrival on the scene. There’s nary a break from monster riffs, breakneck paces, and aggressive rock - one such break became on their defining songs (Creep), while the other is mostly gross (Wet My Bed). That being said, there’s no doubt about their rock chops, be it the single Plush, or the exceptional tracks like Crackerman, Dead & Bloated, Wicked Garden and Where the River Goes. The hard hitting rock does obscure the groove going on here, which they will perfect on Purple.

I find the songs are overly long. They also are built like lego pieces going from part A to B to C to B repeatedly. Their later stuff weren't so clunkily built. Top songs though.

I felt like it was a fresh listen despite having heard the albums dozens and dozens of times in the 90s. I didn’t find it clunky at all. Really though, Weiland is the star and the guys are playing big fat rock over him.

Listening to their Unplugged performance now and goddamn Weiland was great in his time. His delivery is the engine that makes the band go, and was the source of their originality in at least the Core era. I always thought that they got better than this the next 2 albums as a band and it pushed the albums to the next level, though I know most people ended up preferring the big fat rock.

I like fake Layne. Alice in Chains has been putting out pretty good records...

I always loved Core, specially back in the day but the band got so much better in their career, its almost i keep forgetting they have this incredible debut.

And yes, Scott was something else, a musical genius to me. His unplugged performance is so fucking good.

Core has aged extraordinarily well for me. Just a great batch of songs, with big, heavy, booming, Butch Vig-esque production that sounds terrific. Those first three tracks are an all-time-great run.
