Mazzy Star for sure. Fade Into You is a beautiful song and one that I would consider part of the definitive "alternative" sound of the 90s, but there is nothing in it to make me want more.

I like a few Spoon songs, "The Delicate Place" and "The Underdog," but haven't really delved into their catalog other than a few listens to the albums those songs come from. They're certainly better than a lot of other indie rock of that time period, though.

I was in your shoes last year about this time and decided to do something about it. There are multiple good places to start considering how consistently good their albums are, but I recommend “Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga” first.

I love “Chic Tweetz” by the Desert Sessions series, but have zero interest in exploring the rest. Probably bc the rest would be an immeasurable disappointment.

Weird. You don't like the rest of At the Cut? I spent a few months before that album released starting to get into his discography, listening to about 4 or 5 albums, but after he died I haven't been able to push myself to explore much further. I come back frequently to his two Constellation releases, but everything else I rarely visit.

Realized I misread the part of your post where you said you had already listened to the albums containing those songs.

I'm a big fan of "They Want My Soul", but "Kill the Moonlight" is a worthy next step as well.

I'm a big fan of "They Want My Soul", but "Kill the Moonlight" is a worthy next step as well.

I did go back and listen to Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga after your suggestion, and again I enjoyed it. I really like their instrumental choices; the frequent use of acoustic guitar, the horns, subtle strings, weird flourishes of effects and production. They also have an interesting way with songwriting that seems to draw from classic '60s rock like The Beatles as well as '80s post-punk. Good melodies, unusual but accessible structures. I definitely want to check out some more of their stuff.
