Wow Matt's drumming has never been more boring. I don't understand why he chooses to be so stifled/stifling. No energy and generic/simple AF beat.

Ed just... sounds phony. That "energy" he's trying to bring when he goes "ehhhhHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!" just comes outta nowhere and doesn't flow anytime he tries to bring it. He needs to start FEELING a song.

I feel like this song is suffering the most from these two things. It sounds like Matt laid down the drum track while listening to a click track with no idea what the song was going to be, then Ed comes in and lays down his lame ass novice chords on top of it, then everyone else tries their best to dress it up. I don't blame them, it's really hard at that point.

Just terrible, terrible, lame lame stuff here.

leatherman is on the short list of pj songs i actively dislike

and it’s a b-side for that reason. yet this is equally bad and was this album’s second single.

I honestly think it's weird that "bad / weird choice of single" is being considered as... anything important, in terms of predicting what's coming

PJ always did that, they can't choose singles and never could

Do we need a rank every song in the Pearl Jam catalogue to adequately rate Leatherman? I can see the comparison to that song but this has a bit more going on. Whether you think it crowds the song or makes it more interesting might be the difference between liking and disliking it?

I just listened to Leatherman.. hadn't heard it in a long time...

It's also kinda lame... I don't like these kinds of songs, generally, but it's way better than this song because it at least feels cohesive, planned, felt out. On Leatherman, Ed's voice isn't eternally grating and the drumming doesn't sound like a click track. I guess Ed used to actually listen to himself back then.

Jack irons would have been great on this song. Thinking black red yellow.

I love the - what feels like - the unstructured arrangement of the song. It is manic yet I find it a bit compelling.

No way Ed ever gets this one right though

I’m amused/confused by the amount of disapproval it’s pulling, to be honest.

I will say that this song does sort of eradicate any hope for a themed album though.

this band's drummer(s) used to be able to take a fairly structurally and aesthetically standard song, and give it a surprising and off-kilter feel; heck, even Matt did during Binaural - Riot Act; now he just kinda... keeps time
