I'm deadly serious when I say I think Can't Deny Me is a way better song than this. The song get's unbridled hate, but I actually think the main riff and Ed's combined vocal line (And now you want me to breeatthe) is actually pretty clever. It's catchy. The call and response part was pretty much a fail, but overall I find the verses and chorus to be pretty catchy on CDM.

On Superblood, Ed's vocal melody is basically riding the riff in the same melody. There's no real COUNTER melody, which he's always been good at. He's always been clever at finding a good counter melody to a riff that wouldn't be so instant to anyone else. But on this song, he's just riding the generic riff til the wheels fall off. (In The deestance, ugh) He did this better on The Getaway. Not to mention a song like Save You is leagues above this.

Agree, "Can't Deny Me" is better, even with its insipid Kokomo-inspired melody in the chorus. I mean yikes.

Yes. Very quick, phoned-in.

I enjoyed DOTC. I've listened to it quite a few times since it came out, it's surprising in a good way from modern-era Pearl Jam.

But this--taste being subjective and all that, taking into account a band trying new things and diversifying their sound and approach--it's just hard to believe this is the same band.

Irrelevant. I'm not saying I'm a great musician. I'm saying this power chord progression is so simple even I could actually turn my nose up at it. I remember experimenting with power chords a lot when I was first learning and this might have been the first 3 chord progression I tried, same 4/4 rhythm and all. I mean, at least throw a little bit of a a curve in there or something
