See, they've done this punky thing many times before. Whipping is a punky song, and it's fucking amazing. WWS was ripping in the car. Big Wave is a step down but it has some clever things going on. Getaway, MYM are pretty good, and a song like LB that I initally hated when they first played it at Wrigley, is actually half decently catchy.

DOTC was a strong start, not my favorite PJ song but a solid experimentation, which I was feeling a 3 or a 4.

However, I can't wrap my head around how much I dislike Superblood. The vocal style is SO generic. The opening riff is so bland. The main riff from the snippet could have been decent but all I hear is Ed wailing 'I SEE YOU IN THE DEEESTANCE!!" and other horrible lyrics like FOCUS ON YOUR FOCUSNESS. He repeats these weird vocal ticks over and over in the song that just sound so grating. Then we get to the HORRIBLE, uninspired bridge "She was a stunner!" Bland as hell riffs again. He tries to growl but it's all laughable by that point. The solo part was cool but can't save it. I've given it maybe 20 listens at this point, and the most I can muster up is maybe a 2.5, with a severe adverse reaction to the vocals on this song. If it wasn't a single, I'd have just moved on, but alas, we have to wait for the album.

I'm still really excited for the album. I'm hoping this is just a dud for me. I'm really expecting some mega cringe on some of the songs. Retrograde "FEEL THE SOUND" and Comes Then Goes with "Pete Townshend worthy acoustic agression and the lyric, 'We could all use a savior from human behavior" Lol shit man, at least now I'm finally bracing myself.
"love boat captain, take the reins and steer us t'ward the clear"
I loved Love Boat Captain on first listen and still do. It's not the lyrics I care about, it's the delivery and pronunciation. I can't deal with this "I see you in the deeestance" shit

Yup, tried that. Woke up the next morning after it dropped, and hated it less. There's FLASHES of parts that I kinda like you know? I nod my head along a bit here and there, only for Ed to shit all over it with some weird vocal line or some boring riff. Man, it shouldn't be this hard to like a song lol.

You're right, holding hope for the album and it's just a dud.
it's been hard for me to like PJ songs since Vitalogy, I'm still here because they usually grew on me
some songs yeah other are instant love. You have a song like Do The Evolution that I remember going nuts for when I first saw the video. Then there's the entirety of Avocado which maybe took me a few years to appreciate. Or a song like Who You Are that I dont really like til this day lol
I remember *hating* the vocal style of DTE when I first heard it, like "why can't he sing NORMALLY anymore?" it's weird that I'd already started to feel he sounded old and tired by then

he's vocal-ticking *a lot* less than he has been, in my opinion

I think I'm moving in the opposite direction on this one, I may be coming around to it.

I enjoyed the video because it fit the song well and it sure was better than watching 50 year old's dance around in front of a green screen. I'm willing to accept that this song is a little fun and a little unpredictable at the same time. It's still a 3 but certainly doesn't deserve the ire thrown at it.

oh man I LOVED the aggression of his voice on that song. Simply amazing. I'm a metal head and I love death metal growls and Ed's fucking growl on there is on the level of some of the heaviest stuff I love. He was amazing in his prime.

I'd like to understand the story better, because this isn't just passing comment about how hot she was if he's still stunned

i‘m still not sure how i feel about the song, i don’t totally hate it, but the video just isn’t good enough for a band of this stature and reputation.

It was partly the fact that they aren't taking themselves too seriously with the video that made me start to appreciate the song more. Another MYM-style video would have easily killed the song for me.

Not everything ought to be a grand production. Music videos are silly anyway. Pearl Jam needs to do away with their stature and reputation.

Do people still watch music videos anyway? I feel like the DOTC one was the first I’d watched in years.

yeah I liked it, band footage is always hokey in a music video; it's an opportunity to do something different, and they did; I was sold on Mach 1

so why even bother with a video then?
