He's not cramming too many words/syllables in, he's just forced to put emphasis on the wrong part of "away", which makes it sound awkward. You would have the same awkwardness with "I lost her too soon" because it doesn't fit properly. "She was taken too soon" fits in perfectly, but I don't know that it would actually sound any better. I don't mind the odd bit of awkwardness like this in a fun song.

Lightning Bolt is in my top 5 pearl jam albums and I agree with this. Getaway isn't terrible, but it's the textbook definition of bland pearl jam

After a few more listens and a few of your thoughts, I've come around to this one. Hell, I find myself whistling it. IT JUST ISN'T WHAT I WANTED!
I don't think it's as good as Gonna See My Friend and I never reach for that one. I think it's better than Big Wave, but I never reach for that one. It's a lot better than The Fixer, but what isn't? Is it as good as any of the other #2 songs?

Stip, your write up was perfectly on point again. The mashed together nature of the song is really mellowing for me and now it is all sounding much more "right". I still put this near the bottom of their catalogue.
