Hold on a second, all this time I was talking about the Touring Bank 2000 version of "Leatherman" because that's the only version I've ever heard. I just listened to the studio version (for the first time ever!) and it has a completely different rhythm, feel, and aesthetic, and I agree with you that I would not call it punk at all

Really glad this was worked out. From the jangly guitars to the relatively monotone but somehow really musical vocal melody, "Leatherman" always felt very REM-ish to me; even the storytelling component has a very "Fables of the Reconstruction"-ish feel. It takes on some punky elements live but it's not really in the song's DNA. I think the same applies to "U."

can absolutely imagine michael stipe singing leatherman in that same register.

Spritzy Punkers. Each named after one of our favorite pj spritzy punkers. Could maybe do a slightly less carbonated/alcoholic version called the leatherman

a few thoughts:

- When I conceived of the ‘Spritzy’ concept it was meant to entail: ‘Wussy’ , ‘Bubbly’ , ‘Happy and you think the song is satisfactory rock music but the song makes you look/sound like an ass’

- I considered ‘Mankind’ as patient zero but decided against nominating it because it was deliberately designed by Stone to sound like a cheap copy-cat of a grunge song. So there being irony to it I could not bring myself to call it Spritzy. It is ironically spritzy. Then, ironically, PJ themselves subsequently became spritzy

- Supersonic is the archetype. It is not the first, but when in doubt, compare to Supersonic

- This must be the topic of the next RMarch Madness: Worst Spritzy Punker. We might have to auto-DQ Supersonic at the outset, however, just to make things competitive
