So I think I'm hearing: "Feeling angry, knock it off the scale/shelf/stage" upon repeated listens. Not even sure if he repeats the same last word or uses a different one each time.

Also, I hear: "I've been hoping and a hope dies last"

the second time i am confident it is shelf. i think its a different lyric each time

I know it's an incredibly straightforward drum beat (and sounds like Undone) and the first riff is also really simple, but I like how it starts with just a solid beat before it comes crashing in. I dunno, it does it for me. I feel a lot of excited anticipation in those first twenty seconds.

I think the "keep it as simple as possible" intro has *got* to be entirely deliberate, and when I think of comparable ones like "Last Exit" and "Satan's Bed", I keep just wanting to add some sound textures behind it, feedback, some guitar "chugga... chug" like in "Undone", some kind of quiet vocal, anything to make it tickle my ear more

but... I'm getting used to it and even if it's a missed opportunity for me (and I hope that all these songs don't employ the same approach), I get what they were going for - something classic and no-frills

I don't profess to know the touch point for inspiration (though I could ask Stone when we have breakfast ), but, say I'm going for a song inspired by 60's "girl groups", I'd likely start the song with that classic dum...dum dum drumbeat. Three simple hits, and it's instantaneously recognizable, right?

Here, it feels like they're aspiring to more of a pop/punk Kinks/Cheap Trick energy. The form songs of that ilk might take. Those are far from the only influences in SBWM, of course, but, all of those are then filtered through the prism of Pearl Jam, and we get what get as the end result. That intro gives me a small window into their influences when initially conceiving the song.

I hope that approached some semblance of a cohesive thought. It's quite early, and I've not had nearly enough coffee.

I don't like how it starts starts (just the drums), but once the first, lighter guitars hit I like it from there until it really kicks in.

yeah it’s rough- especially when the second iteration of that is so much better. There is a cool layering moment in eddie’s vocal (a deeper accompaniment ) that i like, though

Put me down for "shelf" the first time, and "stage" on the second one.

I'm back and forth on all the "hope dies" possibilities. Someone's suggested, "I've been hoping and I hope that lasts." They all work for me, I think.

I don't like how it starts starts (just the drums), but once the first, lighter guitars hit I like it from there until it really kicks in.

I don't particularly like anything before the 1st "verse" but considering that the "superblood wolfmoon" part could've easily been used as a traditional chorus, I am super glad that we only get that part in the intro and at the beginning of the outro. If that part was repeated after every verse then the song would've been really lame!

I've determined after repeated listens that this song is way better than a lot of you think. Some of you have smartly figured this out. I have yet to enjoy the la la la part however.

I hear “Throughout the hopelessness / focus on your focusness / I’ve been hoping / and a hope dies last / I don’t know anything / I question everything / This life I love is goin’ way too fast” though there’s some chance it’s “I hoped I’d last,” and the second time “Focus on your focusness / turn around for hopelessness / I’ve been hopin’ / and all hope was lost). Can’t for the life of me tell if it’s “knock it off the shelf” or “get off the scale” (leaning toward the former) the first time through and am not sure what he is saying after “hoping that I hurt ya ...”. I agree with the previous post about “beggar.”

It’s quite a revelation hearing this on YouTube slowed down by 25% (.75x Playback speed) - sounds much more like an average song of theirs. And the slower you go, the more drunk Ed seems. Also recommend listening to it sped up!
