I think this song was originally a 2-2:30 song. My uniformed guess - it was too similar to the Backspacer tracks like GSMF or Got Some so they kept adding to it.

I hear “Throughout the hopelessness / focus on your focusness / I’ve been hoping / and a hope dies last / I don’t know anything / I question everything / This life I love is goin’ way too fast” though there’s some chance it’s “I hoped I’d last,” and the second time “Focus on your focusness / turn around for hopelessness / I’ve been hopin’ / and all hope was lost). Can’t for the life of me tell if it’s “knock it off the shelf” or “get off the scale” (leaning toward the former) the first time through and am not sure what he is saying after “hoping that I hurt ya ...”. I agree with the previous post about “beggar.”

It’s quite a revelation hearing this on YouTube slowed down by 25% (.75x Playback speed) - sounds much more like an average song of theirs. And the slower you go, the more drunk Ed seems. Also recommend listening to it sped up!

This thread is a testament to what careful listening will uncover, and what you lose when you don't invest the time in discovery. I still think there is a ceiling this song will have for me as I don't like the sub-genre, many of the influences, etc. but I do think it is a strong version of what it is, and that at a certain point its ceiling is more on me than the song. But I've been impressed with the small moments I keep discovering baked into a relatively simple and surfacely unimpressive structure. Strong lyrics, interesting themes, challenging macro song arrangement choices, and a ton of little musical moments that I keep discovering.


I was listening to some Lightning Bolt songs this morning (yes, I will die upon this hill) and there are a ton of songs on that album that are peppered with the same small moments that open up and enhance songs upon repeat and careful listening. Most could benefit from the Superblood Wolfmoon treatment. I love a lot of those songs, so I've just organically had the discovery time (and I listen to each of these songs a lot in a row when I do those review and guided tour threads), but it is really clear (and sad) how much harder the flat and loud production of that record REALLY buries those moments and makes them hard to hear. I hope someday someone with a lighter touch revisits the album.

It could work as an intro (the snippet) if you repeated it. I love where it is - you need something that has a meatier texture to follow up the solo. If you started with it, however, the first verse might sound a bit too anemic.

The only real part i could do without is about the 10 seconds prior to the solo and the solo as is. The rest has really grown on me.

I get why they're there but I kinda don't like them, mainly because they're Ed straining his voice, the highest notes in the song, and I don't want those highlighted too much

Yes. I listened again today and those highlighted yelled backing vox annoyed me greatly. It's not the style of Ed that I like.
