I’m also coming around to the idea and desires of being a cover band. Not tribute band .... cover band. Tribute bands are fuckkng weird. They dress up like the band members.

But a band that puts on a show playing a bands music. I can dig on that.

I once played a doors tribute show with a few other bands. We played 5 songs. There were probably a thousand people there and it was probably my favorite music experience ever.

I was going to say I’d rather die than play in a “covers band” but on reflection I think there are a few, very limited circumstances in which I could potentially enjoy it, e.g. the songs chosen have a tightly-defined vibe or theme (only 60s surf instrumentals, etc.)

But circumstances where I know there will be a built in crowd of a thousand people playing songs from a band I respect ? Hell yea

Wasn’t sure where to post this but figured this thread was appropriate.

How long would you give to getting an all-original band off the ground before bailing? Ive been playing with these guys for over a year, we have maybe 10 originals to show for it, and no gigs played or even scheduled at this point. I’m basically done, but want to make sure I’m not off base.

I was much younger when i started my band. BUt shit, isn't it about getting out and laying in front of people? If the rest of the guys dont have the energy or excitement for that, then bail.

Go play! Thats the fun part.

Yeah it sounds like the other guys are either not that into either, or just aren't hustling hard enough to book gigs. In my experience it's always one guy that does most of the legwork for a band and in this case you might have to be that guy. IF you feel that the songs are strong and you think that it's worth pursuing, i would suggest maybe getting some budget together to record 1 or 2 of them professionally along putting together a video - not a "music video" but maybe a live rehearsal or something similar with a little polish. You're probably going to need something tangible to show to get gigs unless you're already involved in your local scene....and those kinds of things will show that you're serious. Plus it might galvanize your band-mates and get them more engaged and interested.

I'm old now. I don't have the time or patience to work with 3 or 4 other people to help finish and/or polish my ideas. Though, most of what I do now could certainly benefit from it. I'm content writing and recording in my spare time, even if the only people who hear it are family, friends, and .5% of RM. That being said, playing live was an absolute thrill. Especially watching people really connect to something you wrote. I miss that high a lot. Those were the good old days, I guess. If I somehow became independently wealthy, I'd definitely seek it out again.

Yeah there’s definitely a lack of leadership in the group, and given that creatively it’s not really my project, I’m not inclined to step into that role.

I was brought into this by the drummer, who is a good friend of mine. He met the guitarist/singer and they hit it off, and after a while brought me in. I came into it wanting a project where i could just be the bass player.

There are other issues too that I chalk up mostly to a lack of experience. Guitarist/singer has hearing issues, gear issues, tone issues. And like i said he can sing and play but I’m not sure he’s going to be good in the frontman role. He’s also extremely particular when it comes to a second guitarist. We had a guy who was perfectly capable, our age, into the songs, but wasn’t playing “exactly” what the main guy wanted to hear, and he did nothing to work with the guy on it. So second guitarist is being kicked out now, which in my opinion is a bad move that is only going to slow this down even more. I’ve expressed my frustration that after more than a year we are where we are.

So I’ll be available for these guys for the time being, but plan to focus my creative energy on my own project and see if that takes flight.
