I've been listening to this sparingly since it came out. Want to keep things fresh! Put it on for a trip on the ol' treadmill today and it really locked in for me. I'm not saying it's brilliant or anything, but any real reservations I had slipped away.

What's so weird about it on first listen is what's not there. You keep expecting traditional song structure features and when they don't arrive, it's simply off-putting at first.

There's a lack of common progression within a common PJ archetype. Gives it an almost improvisational feel at times (la da da).

to me that's one thing PJ was good at when they were my favourite band: taking a traditional style of song and fucking up its structure, then re-presenting it as Pearl Jam; and sure, this doesn't do that to the same extent as they once did that, but it does do that... more than the same kind of song would have done in the last 3 albums

There's a looseness to it that has been severally missing in the last 2-3 albums.

If they are having fun making music together like it sounds, then i hope they decide to be more productive over the next few years

my unfulfilled future wish includes them seeing how much people dug DOTC and then quickly doing a follow-up more in that vein.

will live in Jamily Heaven with the Backspacer EP.

Yeah, I think I endorse pretty much these exact sentiments. I've only listened to it once per day this week, but each time I do I (a) enjoy it, and (b) become more cognizant of why I was so thrown by it structurally those first few times through.

This has gone up in my books. Not as good as DOTC but it's come a long way since I considered turning it off midway through my first listen.

What “looseness” does this song have that’s been “lacking” in any of the recent albums? I swear some of you have memory loss, it's the same fucking word salad as the previous albums, Gonna See My Friend, Johnny Guitar, Supersonic, MYM, Swallowed Whole, Force of Nature, SBWM. It's the same crap for better or worse

Perhaps mostly with the production. Feels like the band is playing together in a room rather than individual parts pumped in.

Also what does word salad have to do with it ?

The melody is fun. The guitar parts/parts of the song follow a fatness strict outline than standard modern day pj rockers.

It’s also a vibe.

I guess I took "looseness" more towards the vocals, and I feel like he's done this style (word salad) a bunch of times.

I'll give you that about the production, it's pretty good. No BoB lasers to be found.
