Wrong.

Maybe I'm in the new album pre-glow, but when I've revisited Backspacer recently, it's felt much better than I thought it would based on the negativity here. It's pointless to single out members of the band who sound great on the album because they all do. Amongst the Waves doesn't have the chorus of Alive or Dissident, and I disagree with Harmless....I believe that is what they were going for......but it is still a really decent song.

Solid 3.5

The themes of resilience & redemption resonate strongly with me on this one.

Holy alliteration, Batman!

When I think about where I was and some of the choices I was making before I got together with my wife, this one holds a special place for me.

Are they aping themselves a bit musically with this one? Maybe so, but, I'd much rather listen to them do it than I would anyone else.
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I really like the chord shapes/progression in the verses. The lyrics do a good job of solidifying the feeling that he music evokes.

When I talk about them maybe "aping" themselves a bit, it's really just in terms of the band playing around with the anthemic, "mid-tempo-itis" that they'd consciously avoided for so long, In Hiding & Faithful being two other examples.

It's them trying to make some "alt rock" anthemic piece of shit that was popular at the time with the pre-hipster crowd. I cringe every time I hear the chorus.

The important thing, as PhatJ has said many times (and I agree), is that it's a better song than Sleight of Hand.

I love ATW, but to me, it's got nowhere near the mystique or gravity of Sleight of Hand, which is one of my all-time favourites. Shame that the one time I saw it live, Ed forgot the entire second verse (Montreal 2011 I think?).

For the record, I think Sleight of Hand is PJ’s best song. And stip knows it.

This song attempts greatness but fails

Best song on Backspacer, cheese and all. Ed’s delivery makes up for the lyrics which aren’t that bad anyway. Mike’s solo is the best moment on the album. Why do people feel it’s out of place? Waves can be unpredictable, duh.
