I watched “Mistaken for Strangers” again tonight. What a fucking great little movie. I’m finally going to see the National live for the first time, this year, in July. We bought tickets tonight! It’s about a week after I turn 40, and it will be the best birthday present ever. I can’t wait.

i'm seeing them later this summer, but i don't know a whole lot about them. i've casually listened to them over the years, but never anything more. i had a few songs of their from alligator and boxer, but that is it. i just recently got boxer and enjoy the album a good bit, particularly the front half. what should i get next between alligator or high violet or the debut?

notwithstanding my affinity for alligator, high violet is WAY more accessible and a better representation of what you'll get at the show this summer.

i would do high violet and then trouble will find me

Agree with Chris on what to check out next, though I’d lean harder into Trouble Will Find Me, just personal preference.

Also, if you’re checking out their debut it’s a little more of an alt-country vibe than what comes after it. Not that that’s bad, but it doesn’t really sound like what The National came to be known for.

the production on their debut sounds like they mixed it on a cassette recorder

The 2019 fan club package was significantly delayed (sound familiar?) but it looks like they're going to make it worth it; an Instagram post from today appears to reveal that it's a 3xLP: https://www.instagram.com/p/B-FeFiCFdup ... f616encfx9

Yeah, I'm late on this, but if you've heard Alligator/Boxer, I'd say continue on through the discography before roping back around to check out the S/T and Sad Songs. Hearing the band's progression from Alligator through their career is pretty exciting to do.

Sad Songs really is a damn good album. It’s criminally underrated.

This is missing the original five minute intro about recording the album but it is nice to have the whole recording play as one set.

Looks like the BAM showing on YouTube was the start of essentially weekly Exciting Communal Events.

Didn't know they were sitting on this for years; it's never been released, far as I know.

It'd be pretty awesome to visit their studio in upstate NY.
