This high school senior who must have just turned 18 voted in the wrong primary.

The way the polling place was set up, there were two entrances in the front of a high school auditorium. One for Rep and one for Dem. They led to one room with booths seperated by party, but the check-in table itself was kind of nondescript if you didn't enter from either of those front two entrances.

This kid, having come from class, came in through the back of the auditorium and didn't realize there were two seperate lines. He also probably had little idea how Texas primaries worked, having never voted before (though it should be on his mind as a high school senior where government class is core curriculum in Texas, but that's a different conversation...)

Well, he realized after his vote that he voted in the wrong primary and he was pissed, sad, and frustrated. I can just imagine how much he was looking forward to this day and I absolutely hate knowing that he's going to look back at his first vote for the rest of his life and feel like it didn't matter or that he ruined it for his candidate.
he should just go home and bang on a trash can

Two lines is dumb. Just have one line and when you check in they can confirm your party affiliation and hand you the appropriate ballot.

If he got to the front of the line and found the wrong paper, couldn't he simply leave and go in the other line?
Oh my god, you're gonna get the kid shot by a KKK member "policing" the polls for people voting twice.

He could have asked a poll worker for help, but it's embarrassing to ask a bunch of old people for help in filling out bubbles next to names. Probably, as he worked through the ballot, he kept not seeing the names he was expecting, and just figured they were races that he didn't know about. Then he gets to the end figures he's gonna look stupid asking questions, so he just turns it in. Then he gets out the door, sees the two lines, and it all dawns on him.
Everything's perfectly all right now. We're fine. We're all fine here, now, thank you. How are you?

But the presidential candidates are nearly always on top, hence the term “down ballot.” Do they do things different in Texas?

You know that. I know that. I wouldn't be surprised if an 18 year old, first time voter didn't know that. Maybe he thinks it comes at the end like a concert headliner.

There's gotta be a least one MAGA-dummy who voted for a Dem by mistake though, that's what I'd be telling myself if I were him.
Lol. This assumes he was trying to vote in the democratic primary, which he was not.

Only thing I could think of is that he probably thought the first half of the ballot was dem and the next was republican, and when he got to the end he was like..where are my candidates on the ballot? Still, he could have stopped right there and not cast the ballot but he didn't. He was young. He was nervous. He probably was afraid to ask for help. Only thing I can think of to explain it.

Regardless, it sucks to see it and I'm sure it happens fairly often with people not understanding how the polls work.

You're acting like you've never met a human before. "It didn't seem right, but I kept plugging on," is an EXTREMELY common excuse from people when they don't understand something.

Really, though, I can keep throwing this stuff up, but he's a kid, a first time voter, the only people there who might help are mean looking old people, who probably already yelled at him for wandering in the back door from his classes. Nerves are high. Brain is still forming. People have a tendency to say, "fuck it," and just go along when they don't understand instructions.

It took him a little time to figure everything out. Unfortunately, he was out the door when he did.
