On September 29, 2018, Lucasfilm Story Group's Matt Martin revealed on his Twitter account that the canon tier system originally established by Leland Chee in the early 2000s is no longer used following the canon reboot.

All Marvel Star Wars comic books and novels beginning with A New Dawn—is considered part of the new canon, on account of the creation of the Lucasfilm Story Group, which currently oversees continuity as a whole.
Right but again what I said is the most accurate. For example, Poe and Rey meet on the novelisation of TFA. But not in the film. So when they meet in screen in TLJ, that's canon regardless of the book.

The novels are canon unless they contradict the films.
It’s very strange that they would set up stuff that contradicts canon, but possibly what you get with directors with creative control. At least with this book, it is very unlikely to be contradicted by a movie anytime soon.

It's because the writers of these adaptations are usually working with early scripts. They start there books usually before shooting begins. So obviously a lot changes.

But TLJ came out after the TFA book. They should have respected the book.

But Rian was well into production before the book came out. Also the books defer to the movies. This goes all the way back to the OG novelizations.

I think that's a poor way of handling it, and Lucasfilm themselves have gone out to say before the release of TFA, that from now on, everything released is proper canon, and not in the old system.

Right. It's not the old tiered canon system like it used to be.

I also consume Star Wars media, but I don't spend pages arguing over the relevance of a single line of text in a book no one will read for a movie that no one likes.

This whole conversation started though because of Palpatine being a clone. I don't see how that contradicts the movie in any way. So I think it's a safe bet that it is canon that he is a clone

According to McDiarmid there was a line in the movie confirming he was a clone but it got cut.

Assuming this is true, this is what I wanted and what I was speculating about:

"He then deduces Palpatine's dark side spirit is too strong for the clone body, and is causing serious degeneration to it."

This goes back to and is lifted from splinter of the minds eye(I think?). Palpatine had millions of clone bodies cos the dark side would corrupt and rot the one he was in so he needed loads of spares.

A concept from the old EU that I've always really loved. Would have been great to see explicitly on screen.

I think it might be still canon? It was a graphic Novel series I think?

Memory on it is shot apart from that. Think it was set after ROTJ?

Splinter is set after New Hope and was meant to serve as a "continuing stories of Luke Skywalker" low budget consolation sequel in case Lucas never made another film.

The Palatine clone stuff comes from some post RotJ content. No idea if any of that is still canon or not. Though I assumed it wasn't.

Splinter was never canon. Lucas commissioned it as a possible story for the possible sequel before the first movie was released. After it was successful, he scrapped the idea of using it for the sequel. Palpatine or the Emperor, IIRC, wasn’t even mentioned in the book.

The story you guys are thinking of is Dark Empire. It was a miniseries published by Dark Horse Comics in the early 90s. They did two sequel miniseries for it afterwards. It was never canon either.

Yeah. It was the first cool Star Wars since ROTJ. I think the first Zahn book came out shortly after this came out. Pretty good time to be a SW fan.
