I also saw them play with Mary and it was definitely strange hearing her parts sung by the new South American bassist guy, though for years after her death they simply didn't replace them at all so there was an apparent (and I believe intentional) absence in the places where you expected to hear them.

They still have a photo of her in their Facebook header picture, I never got the sense that they've tried to minimise her role in the band even if they carried on without her.

See, that's already way more than I knew about the situation. At the time I just sort of recoiled and moved on.
