The Red Sox bouncing back to win an extra 20+ games this year gives me hope for the Jays next year. They certainly didn't make moves in the off-season that suggest 20 more wins, but this season has been the same type of "every that can go wrong will go wrong" season the Sox had last year.

Well it's working out fine for the Dodgers, too, but that's mostly because money doesn't seem to be an issue for them.

As far as hope for a Jays turnaround goes, they have some serious holes to plug, but they also don't have a handful of huge contracts they need to wiggle their way out of.

I agree that it's a really good trade, but the money is the only thing that makes it good. If those players were all on good contracts, it would have been horrendous.

Those were all critical moves, for sure, and I'd agree that Foulke, Mueller, and Millar were part of the core of the team that drove them to a lot of wins and built a winning atmosphere that extended from the 2003 team (which was oh so close) through 2007; but Cabrerra and Roberts were (albeit important) rentals for the end of that year. Duquette brought in Pedro, Varitek, Lowe, Ramirez, Damon, and Wakefield. He was also a crucial front-office guy for the '94 Expos and had a hand in the Orioles resurgence last year. My point was just, I guess, that he's had a great record of building winning teams and I don't hear his name thrown around a whole lot these days (probably because of the lack of WS titles under his watch, I guess).
