Yes! This has me excited: “ Gigaton’s untethered energy makes it sound like it could have come out right between No Code and Yield.”VinylGuy wrote:i loved that review. Lots of things to get exited to.tragabigzanda wrote:http://pancakesandwhiskey.com/2020/03/16/new-pearl-jam-lp-gigaton-stuns-like-its-96/
Also “I know the boys wanna grow their dix and fix and fire things”, turns out we misinterpreted the lyrics. Ed was referencing the Dixie Chicks for short.

Never Destination could be a word shit salad like SBWM. Comes Then Goes could be a boring Ed solo acoustic track. Who Ever Said I'm REALLY hoping delivers an awesome PJ track I've been waiting for, but it may turn out more The Getaway or something like that. And River Cross we pretty much know what it is, a nice Ed track.tragabigzanda wrote:Vindicator wrote:Seems like Ed was pretty prolific this time around, writing Who Ever Said, SBWM, Never Destination, Comes Then Goes and River Cross.
Ed wrote 5 out of the 12 songs.
Jeff wrote 2.
Stone 1.
Matt 1
Mike 1.
DOTC was a full band effort and Seven O Clock I'm not sure who gets the credit there, only that it originated from a jam session.Great scenario

Yeah, SBWM lyrics are as good as...Lets say, Spin The Black Circle or Breakerfall lyrics.
They are just ok.
They are just ok.

This is precisely what I thought of.
I love Off He Goes. Great production and some of my favourite lyrics by Ed.

I dont think Comes Then Goes will be like Off He Goes. The reviews brings something about a song in The Who / Pete Townsend style. So I cant think much similarity with OHG and a Who song.
Edit: Comes Then Goes | Off He Goes ... Now everything makes sense, sorry guys

Ed writing 6 out of the 12 tracks. Yikes. You would think the other members would have a bunch of stuff piling up for years.

Very well could have. Just means Ed likely didn't feel like singing on whatever else was brought in.Vindicator wrote:Ed writing 6 out of the 12 tracks. Yikes. You would think the other members would have a bunch of stuff piling up for years.
More sole Ed credits than is typically my preference, but, I won't judge before hearing them.
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

Are we going off the Italian site? Guess we’ll see when we get the album. Seven O’Clock was apparently an early jam but is credited to only Ed. We really have no idea how much input the band has in something like that I guess.

Sometimes Ed writes half the record and you get Binaural. Sometimes you get Backspacer. Who writes what has never been a particularly good barometer for what an album will eventually be, particularly because the way the band seems to award songwriting credit is for who brought in the demo, which is odd when you think of how much something like Nothing as it Seems changed from its demo to its final state.

I've generally not liked Ed's songwriting on the last few records.Vindicator wrote:Ed writing 6 out of the 12 tracks. Yikes. You would think the other members would have a bunch of stuff piling up for years.
This does not bode well, particularly given how little I enjoy SBWM.
I think I'm going to have to reset my expectations.

If Ed is the engine to move the band along into releasing new music, then so be it.

Re: The Official GIGATON Thread
I don't even know what "lyrics, Ed / music, Ed" means
clearly it means he writes the whole song's lyrics, that's one person's job
but other than that, it means what, that he writes a guitar part? puts some chords together? the strength of the song overall is still what the band (and producer) add to that, in terms of arrangement and instrumentation; the song is still the sum of everyone's creativity unless Ed is literally going around telling them all what to play in great detail... which he may be doing, idk
not one man can be greater than the sum

I think Jeff said 1-2 years ago, that the other members had a bunch of songs they had worked on without Ed, and was just waiting for him to put lyrics and vocals on them.

Some of those could have ended up being Quick Escape, DOTC, Alright, etc. Others may have been shelvedAnders wrote:I think Jeff said 1-2 years ago, that the other members had a bunch of songs they had worked on without Ed, and was just waiting for him to put lyrics and vocals on them.

This seems a bit obtuse, clearly the outcome of the above process is strongly determined by the chord progressions and melody ideas brought in by Ed.Ms Harmless wrote:I don't even know what "lyrics, Ed / music, Ed" means

What's wrong with SBWM is entirely due to the faults in Ed's songwriting, not what the other band members are doing.

Re: The Official GIGATON Thread
I think it depends on each song and it's difficult to know without hearing the original demo to see how complete the song was before bringing it to the band. Listen to Matt Cameron's demo of The Fixer. Totally different song but that main riff was the same. He gets total writing credit. A song like SBWM, I'm sure Ed had it mostly complete and Mike just layed down a solo ( gets no writing credit for that)Ms Harmless wrote:I don't even know what "lyrics, Ed / music, Ed" means

The songs are definitely a product of all their inputs that's for sure.

Who Ever Said and Seven O'Clock don't necessarily sound like typical Ed songs. Never Destination and Comes then Goes for sure do. I enjoy River Cross so I'm good with that one.
