Having to spit out the line "Focus on your focusness" really fast is an example of a clunky line. Another would be "I was prisoner!" It just sounds clunky imo. The lyrics aren't too bad. "This life I love is going way too fast" is a nice line. As I've heard it more and more, I've grown to ignore the clunkyness so it bothers me less and I can enjoy the song more for what it is.

The song is merely "Okay" is my point. I'm hoping for way better and I'm confident the album will deliver at least a few great tracks. Really hyped for Quick Escape, maybe Who Ever Said and Take The Long Way.
I can see the “focus on your focusness” line but I don’t see a problem with the “I was a prisoner” part being a word salad.

I just listened to DOTC again after not hearing it for a few days--my god that's a truly great song.

But... the first instance of "focus on your focusedness" is probably the only instance in the song where he's cramming too many syllables into too small a space (and I'm still not convinced that one isn't "fucks all your focusedness", which fits perfectly). Maybe "singing in the distance" is crammed, but I think that one fits well regardless. "Prisoner" fits perfectly considering two syllables is a normal pronunciation.

I mean... whatever. Opinions are opinions, and I'm not trying to convince anyone to like the song. But the idea that the song is "word salad" is just a massive overstatement based on one or two arguably clunky lines. There's very little awkward phrasing, and definitely no more than plenty of other PJ songs.

Prisoner is three syllables, it just does't feel like it fits well with the beat, note how fast he has to spit it out to make it two syllables. It's whatever, the song has grown in me by this point, it's a 2/5 maybe a 3/5 on a great day, and probably my least favorite single they've ever released, BUT in the context of a solid album I'm ready to forgive it.

I pronounce "prisoner" with two syllables; I mean yes, it technically has three, but it's very far from unusual to hear it as two

Johnny's favourites are Quick Escape and Who Ever Said. I think after KidC-, this is the first guy saying Who Ever Said is THAT good. A number of positive takes in the reviews we have seen but hardly anyone cited it as contender for best song.

I just had "Hail Hail" follow SBWM in my shuffled playlist, and it worked; both that and DOTC are mingling well with older material, which is remarkable to me and a thing I've not felt for a long time

Man, I cannot wait to hear Quick Escape based on all these reviews. I hope I haven't built it too high in my head.

Same. I could say that about a number of songs actually. Except for Never Destination, Buckle Up and perhaps Comes Then Goes, I've set pretty high expectations for all the songs I haven't already heard. River Cross is a bit different given I've heard the live version so I kinda know what to expect but I do think the album version is going to be great. Lately, some of the reviews have been kind to Comes Then Goes and the friggin' thing is over 6 minutes long so I'm finding it hard to taper expectations for that one too now.

There's an explicit version and a clean version on Spotify. The only difference is the "we are each of us fucked" line, so I don't think it's "fucks all your focusedness.."

Not sure theres a need for a clean version if the original can't be understood .
