You must have. I probably need 100 more listens before I can rate this against Rival.

Rival is a 5 star song for me. They're such different songs though. But I could see Quick Escape eventually being a 5 star song, just too hard to say right away. I will say it's a very good candidate.

It would have been a very bad idea to release this as a single. It would have ruined everyoens expectations and or interest in the rest of the record.

Why do you say that? It’s so much better than SBWF and would have piqued interest in what the rest of the album holds.

he's saying the truth which is we are a giant bunch of maniacs and if our first two examples of the new pearl jam record were DOTC and Quick Escape we would have thought it was the second coming of Vitalogy or some shit. Better that it was a more middle of the road PJ song for second single so we could keep expectations in check and thus actually enjoy the actual album.

Gotcha. More about keeping our expectations of the album in check. True, my expectations would have been through the roof had they released Quick Escape as the second single. But that’s on us, not them. You generally release the best songs as singles to give the album the best chance of success. I’d also argue that Quick Escape is actually a better representation of this album than SBWF.
