I get that no album will satisfy everyone, but I think we can all agree that this one sounds more like a band effort, and more of an effort in general, that anything since Riot Act.

I can't really compare this to pre-S/T albums as those were so long ago and I've heard them so many times both album and live that they're basically a part of me even if I don't really listen to them anymore. And yeah, that sounds sappy but it is what it is. But, this is the most excited I've been since RA for sure and that's a very pleasant surprise. Plus I'm drunk.

There's some clunky shit on here, make no mistake, but how can Pearl Jam in 2020 make songs like "DotC," "Buckle Up," "Alright," and "Quick Escape"? And while those are the highlights on my first listen through, there are a bunch of good songs, production choices, and noteworthy performances throughout. In fact, the only songs I found myself waiting for the end were literally at the end; "Retrograde" and "River Cross."

This is really close to my impression after one dedicated listen. "Retrogade" and "River Cross" are both major slogs, 10 minutes of tuneless molasses. But for the first ten tracks, the whole thing just sort of works, the peaks standing tall and the valleys (the Vedder rockers, mostly) never dipping too far down. I'm especially enjoying the return of the more divided songwriting duties; having Stone, Matt, and Jeff contribute complete songs that steer around Eddie's default themes and cadences is such a boon to the palettes of PJ's best records, it's nice to see them make a U-turn back in that direction here.

The past 2 Wrigley shows I sat behind Jill and their nanny. It was uncomfortable making fun of Ed’s stupid call and response during corduroy when she could hear every word.

I only got in one listen tonight, and afterwards was able to pick a few songs here and there, so it's hard to say much of weight to it. But I will say it's very striking; this honestly feels like a different band than made the last two records.

It's painfully obvious listening to this album that Retrograde was recorded during a different session than the rest. It sticks out, unfortunately.
