How does their new song feel about growing up in the suburbs? Is it pro or con?

The Suburbs is full of a sometimes cynical but generally warm, playful nostalgia.

This new song isn't really about that.

I should probably take this to the Other Bands forum, but what the hell is this song about? Someone said the music video helps enforce the message. So the song is about doing copious amounts of lsd?

Arcade Fire is a band I really want to like, and kinda like, and there are a few great songs on each of their albums, but we keep moving right past each other. Haven't heard the new song yet.

When asked about how many songs were not on the album, he said there were not many. They started out with 10 to 15 demo’s and only 2 or 3 did not make it to the album. Total studio time was 7 or less weeks, but spread over 3 years, and they work very fast, with the band in one studio and Eddie in another room with his own team. With everybody having children wanting to stay closer to home, it can be difficult. A longer time or a different studio might be good in the future.

For B, Lightning Bolt and Backspacer feel like one big record.

Somehow, I missed these tidbits when I skimmed M's review the first time.

If it is in an interesting song people don't seem to care. I don't think it's his lyrical strongpoint, personally (he's a better seeker than a prophet), and so the lyrics are not necessarily in a place to elevate a song that otherwise may have needed it.

The "prophet" lines in Unthought were pretty good, if I remember. Hell, even the semi-influenced-by-this verse lines in Amongst the Waves were the only thing about the first half of that song that weren't absolute shit.

For me, it's when he works too hard to be playful (Got Some, Supersonic, Ole), tries to be croony or tender (facets of Come Back, most of Just Breathe), or gets so lost in the art of telling of a story that he distances himself from the emotional core (Unemployable, Gone, possibly Lightning Bolt) that it starts to be a problem.

I think that's just a stupid marketing strategy on his part because BS is so hugely popular.

That. And also, 1) this might be the dark, odd side to Backspacer's light, easy side, and 2) at least if it's "one album" in his mind, it's still not actually one album, and even if it were, the terrible songs on one half would be more forgiveable because of some (hopefully) good songs on the other half. As far as it taking 7 weeks to record, meh.. that's normal. Once you have the songs it doesn't take very long to record them. The album took four years to get done overall, that's the main positive. I'd be worried if they'd said the album took 7 weeks to write AND record (which is kind of what they said about Backspacer near enough, if I remember rightly).

Also, he didn't say they sounded like one record, did he? Just that he thinks of them as that. In the end, it doesn't matter how he thinks of them as long as the end product is good.

New AF single is brilliant IMO.

The torch has been handed from PJ to The Arcade Fire, for me. What I mean is they are now the 1 band I expect to put out a stunning album each time. I still think PJ has it in them, and I'm more excited for this album than anything since Yield, but AF is lightyears ahead of PJ now.

They're a young band in their prime making interesting music. This is probably their No Code/Yield period (speaking broadly as possible).

I dunno why people get so invested in Pearl Jam if they think they've lost their creative spark - there are so many younger bands out there that are releasing killer albums.

Old-faithful bands I'm in love with atm: Wintersleep, Sigur Ros, Arcade Fire.

Bands which I'm still interested in, based on what I'm hearing: NIN, Kings of Leon, Soundgarden.

Pearl Jam... well, I'm still a fanboi in terms of my interest in hearing new stuff, but I'm getting more able to admit where it fails by the day.

New AF single is brilliant IMO.

I dunno why people get so invested in Pearl Jam if they think they've lost their creative spark - there are so many younger bands out there that are releasing killer albums.

Pearl Jam is really what helped me branch out and find those other bands that are actually making great music. I respect the hell out of PJ for opening my ears and helping me understand good music. So it's a bit of a nostalgia thing for me and it's also me hoping that they still have amazing music in them.

Jeff could do a disco record. But it would have to be a solo album, possibly involving Stone here and there.
