I don't like Springsteen (who knew!) but I liked this song a lot on my first (and so far only) listen, including Ed's vocal delivery.

Oh hm. I like this. I think this one is going to grow on me a lot. But I'm only two minutes in so let's see where it goes.

Count me as another one who thinks the verses are the highlight. Chorus is alright, but the verses I really like.

I'm not sure this needed to be the longest song on the album. I agree with whoever said the climax is sort of underwritten. But I think the verses are great. The ending few minutes remind me of ...OH GOD EDDIE IS HEE'ING :(

...Anyway, I dont really like the ending very much.

both opinions were me!

I'm not sure everything but the verses is actually bad, or whether the verses are so good nothing was worthy of following them

still, let's just call it a flawed masterpiece

Or maybe something off the rising? This album reminds me of the Rising actually. Not musically, but a big thematic statement linked to a major life event.

I had an 8 hour zoom meeting today so I'm fried and don't have it in me to elaborate, but they seem like musical and thematic inversions of each other. SoH is tight and cold and claustrophobic. Seven OClock is warm and open. SoH is about giving up on your dreams and the possibility that things might get better. Seven O Clock spends the whole song explicitly rejecting that perspective - it literally puts it to bed

I might agree, but the Trump references hold it back. It’s like the dream world of the song is broken by a real-world reference. Same thing with the government references in River Cross. Still really like both of them though.

have you ever heard a Springsteen song before? Those first few verses are mimicking his cadences (and even his lyrical styling) as surely as DotC is doing the same with David Byrne
