It is so weird to have a Pearl Jam album where the best track is the single.

Third listen last night and I'll try hold off till I have the full quality songs and liner notes.

Who Ever Said started to really click for me - I liked it before, but it's starting to climb.

SBWM is good, DOTC is great. Quick Escape is awesome, but I wonder if once of the sheen of "this sounds like the past!" wears off it'll drop down a bit.

I really like Alright but wish it lifted a bit more than it does towards the end with the backing vocals.

Seven O' Clock's verses are extremely enjoyable, but I'm not entirely on board with the chorus just yet.

The first 6 songs are a great run, then it starts to go wonky.

I'd happily never listen to Never Destination again. Take the Long Way was far more palatable this time, so it's not yet an insta-skip. Buckle Up continues to be a delight, and I think Comes then Goes would've been a perfect closer.

By the time you get to the last two songs, it does feel like a bit of a drudge. Retrograde is fine but forgettable (I think Sirens was a better, more focused example of this type of song). River Cross is interesting, and could grow on me - I'm intrigued by Ed's choice to not pitch his vocals as intimately as he could've done - trying to work out if that's positive or negative.

All in all, so far a far more complex reaction to a Pearl Jam album than I've had for a while, which feels like a good thing.

Actually I think the main riff (starting at about 26 seconds in) sounds most like "Far Behind"

Never destination and take the long road are gone. They just break the whole flow up on me. So awful.

Never Destination is great; pearl jam does Tom Petty/Bruce Springsteen.

McCready had it right: Gigaton is total musical redemption.

I’m not bored of saying it but if you told me quick escape was an old demo they found from 90 and just re recorded it I would believe you.

It’s got that big soaring clashing thing like breath goin on

Yeah, the chorus sounds straight out of Ten to me. That was my first thought the first moment I heard it, and at first I didn't trust what I was hearing.

The song Quick Escape reminds me most of is this:



Specifically the live version.

And also you guys are so full of it acting like Binaural and Riot Act are the best PJ because now we finally get a song that sounds like Ten/Vs era and you guys eat it up!

Who Ever Said and River Cross are my favs so far
There are a lot of songs and parts of songs to grow and discover
Ed’s vocals are so diverse, the run of different vocal stylings from song to song is really amazing at this point in their career.
I know it’s getting knocked but Take The Long Way is a standout as well.

I've been wondering about this. Somewhere in his comments (not necessarily the first review, but maybe answering our follow-up questions), he said something sounded like "Better Days." The opening note of River Cross does that, but I think I'm hearing it somewhere else on the record, too. Maybe in Alright? Retrograde? I'll need to try to pick it out again later.

Anyway, I think people weren't happy hearing him say that at the time, but, unless it was Retrograde (which seems to be toward the bottom for a lot of folks), now it seems there's a good chance he was talking about a song that most of us are enjoying quite a bit.

Some KidC- comments I found. I answered my own question re: "Better Days." He was talking about Retrograde. Also, he compared Seven O'Clock to Otherside:

Retrograde sounds like the end of better days. And the ending is awesome. That’s the comparison that came to mind. Is it exact? Nah. But it’s got that soaring thing down.

7 o’clock was a standout for sure. It was like an amplified fuuuck I’m blanking on the song. It was a riot act b side. You can’t know what it’s liiiiike. To feeeeeel. What is that song?

My initial thought with hearing the first 4 tracks was “well...they’ve got 4 new show openers

There are 2 supersonicy punk songs (never destination and take the long way)

There are no bluesy tracks like Half Full or Let the records play.

I had Buckle Up pegged as my fav song based on the title. It was not the rocker I thought it would be.

You can feel every single band members footprint on it. It’s huge and fun.

I see everyone enjoying this album. And Ed seems super proud of it. For very good reason. But as I’ve said before. Fuck. I gotta retool my top 10.

So far I like every single song on this record. Having a hard time pinpointing when that was last true.
