Tuolumne wrote:Retrograde is awesome. Can't wait to blast that one on good speakers. Pearl Jam has *always* from Day 1 had their "cheesy" element. It's ultimately why I attached myself to them moreso than Nirvana way back then (who I love, but just can't relate to as much), who don't have this element in them. Yay for cheesy PJ.
I love it. I can fully appreciate the “it sounds like Sirens, so it sucks” knee jerk, but it isn’t the case that no song with that type of sound can be good. I also think it serves near the heart of the record’s message and as home to most of its dwindling hope.
Yeah, I mean, I casually compared it to Bruce Horsnby and Steve Winwood, but that doesn't even make me automatically hate it. I don't mean that as an insult, just that there's a gap to be bridged for me from there to "Pearl Jam song."

I never got into Nirvana at all. The only big Seattle band that never did anything for me. I like Grohl and the Foo’s though.

I am a guitar guy so it’s more about musicianship than songwriting for me. Mike and Stone are just way better players than Kurt.

I am also a "guitar guy", but it wasn't things like Yellow Ledbetter (or whatever) that excited me, it was stuff like this:

Kurt's guitar here still sounds absolutely electrically exciting to me.

I'm bumping River Cross up in my rankings. Third song on the album to join the five star club. I just sat down with the lyrics in preparation to write the review for TSIS and it just hit me really really hard.

my partner enjoyed all of it but is undecided about 7 O'Clock, it's either nice and chill or "a bit dull"; I told them that for a band I've been following for nearly 30 years they've got an awful lot of songs I didn't love right away

the drum intro of SBWM is a lot less glaringly boring with a complex song behind it

Everyone still has their trademark songwriting behaviors and logic, but it just feels like there’s such a different creative leadership behind this album. Like, someone with an idea got a hell of lot of leeway to put their fixin on everything.
