What do you all think is going on here? I really like this section (best part of the song. Both this and Take the Long Way end on these detour moments that are the highlight).

My favourite part too.
Made me think of the Whitney Houston hologram
She was once strong and in control, but that ended.
Maybe a commentary on people thinking they’re indestructible or that things never end. Never say goodbye...we don’t have to when people seemingly never die ...hologram tour! It’s all a trick we play to avoid reality.
Never (a final) destination

I might be rambling here...

That part particularly reminds me of Tom Petty. The whole song reminds me very much of TP's You Wreck Me, but I'm sure the vocal melody of that last section is directly lifted from another TP song, presumably deliberately and as a tribute.

I love how it's perfectly fine with following it's own loose logic. They allow moments for unexpected instrumental breaks, and go into this whole different thing in the song's last moments.
Well said
This is a band playing very confidently with themselves. This is a band that is played together for thirty years with absolutely no ego holding them back.

I've been trying to figure out which song Never Destination reminded me of and I think you nailed it.

This one really grew on me after I initially kind of ignored it. Sounds like it would be great live, the middle part Ed sounds like hes playing to a crowd even though hes in the studio

This has really hit me today how much fun this song is.

yea, its 4 chords .....it is very pete townshend/the who. There is all this space that allows the band to just play the shit out of it. Much like....the real me.....

This song is fun as hell and really good at the same time. It gets better on every listen. It keeps outperforming my expectations. Every time.

there's a lot going on here. It's like SBWM in that we're conditioned to approach it as something disposable and we miss the layers

This song would be so much fucking fun to play with a band. Total who song. 4 chords. Space for improv and raucous fun.

I really want to point out that last 20 seconds or so of this song. It goes out on such a great beautiful outro that could have been a bridge elsewhere in the song. "So I say to them, never say goodbye" That part sounds like a classic Pearl Jam section. The rest of the song sounds like a Who cover basically, but it is pretty fun. I wish it had been given a rougher edge guitar wise like Whipping or something, but it is what it is. That outro is gold though.

"A little trick I play on my mind" is a fantastic closing line. It makes you want to go back and find out what was said up to that point.
