Gigaton: Official album thread

There are plenty of bands who have made albums better than this 30 years into their career...this album isn't THAT good

My knowledge is neither deep nor broad enough to agree with or refute this statement. Do you have any examples to share?

Bruce Springsteen
Steely Dan
Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds

Tom Waits

i think solo artists reflect a different dynamic, for what its worth.


That Tool album was incredibly disappointing

Okay then remove three of those, point stands

Fear Inoculum is already my second favorite Tool album and waaaaaaaaay better than Gigaton

i gave it about 5 listens and nothing stood out. I wasnt a big fan of 10000 Days either though

FI is basically a Steely Dan metal album so of course I love it. Yacht metal

gave the album leak a listen on headphones last night as i lay in bed. didn’t make it all the way through before dozing off for the night, but that definitely wasn’t the record’s fault. i’ve avoided reading most comments/reviews on the album the last few days, so apologies if any of this has been discussed to death.

at the very least, this is the most sonically interesting album since binaural, if not their entire album output. i really think the dolby atmos ‘screening’ would have been a fantastic way to hear the album for the first time.

songwise, at least what i made it through before i fell asleep, it is refreshing to feel like they were creatively inspired and willing to try new things. dance of the clairvoyants and superblood wolfmoon suggested this was the case, but i’m glad the whole record seems to reflect this, too. whoever this new producer is, i am on board with what he got from them.

early pick for mvp on the album i think is jeff. i really enjoyed his playing, it sounds like he was having a lot of fun.

i think i’m going to like this album quite a bit. not sure how well the songs will translate live yet - i could see the casuals in the crowd losing interest pretty fast on a lot of these songs, and there’s no arena ready anthems/sing-a-longs that i recall. hopefully the band enjoys the challenge of making these songs sound great live.

"Retrograde" would have made a great "second half" to it

This is the first Pearl Jam album that FEELS like a show.

I listened last night with headphones in the dark, eyes closed, and had this thought. After all those years of "trying to write for the live experience" and missing the mark.

Something I just noticed that I like. Retrograde ends with a call to feel the sound, and River Cross ends with a call to share the light. Given the double album closer role that these songs play that's an interesting juxtaposition

FI was pretty well received as far as I can tell. It's just that tool doubled down on the elements of their sound I like the least.

I too feared SBWM would lose its luster once I heard the whole record, but it’s held its own.
