Gigaton: Official album thread

One of these days some of you guys have to get me up to speed on your producer-y knob twiddling technical observations. I just do not get them at all. "They turned one of those hundred knobs on the mixing board thingy the wrong way! This song sucks bc of that! The band has lost it bc they turned that little knob thingy the wrong way! They're phoning it in!" LOL.....

I feel like it should be pretty clear listening to LB and Gigaton back to back. And im not talking about quality of song/songwriting.

It's early days yet, but, looking to future days, who thinks any of these new songs will settle into their top 25? Top 20? Top 10?

I never really know how to evaluate a song or an album I just fell in love with against another that I've been listening to for a quarter of a century.

This record reminds me a lot of when The Rising came out: they achieved something that I thought was no longer possible for them, but also in places tried for and achieved things that I NEVER thought they had in them. Both records are in many ways a return to form (insert joke) for their respective artists, but both are also a deceptively different approach, ambition, and sound relative to what came before. There isn't really another Pearl Jam record that achieves some of the sonic returns this record delivers. There wasn't an old Springsteen record that would scratch your Rising itch, either.

I’m doing my second full listen, and as an outsider, it really feels like O’Brien did this band a great disservice the last two albums before this.

I'm just saying, McParadigm ripped on and complimented Brendan O'Brien in a massive way. Just really interesting. Not criticizing his take, which really has merits. I do think all of the producer stuff is really more about *choices*, and sometimes (well, not sometimes, alot of the times) gets confused with creativity and inspiration.

My rankings of the songs changes on a daily basis the more time I spend with them. I took a drive yesterday to watch the sunset at the ocean (maintaining at least 20 feet of distance from any human on a mostly empty beach). I was listening to Retrograde while admiring the natural scenery on an open, expansive road. The sky was slightly overcast, with some dark clouds rolling in on the horizon. I can’t think of a better way to listen to Retrograde than in a setting like that, except if there was actual lightning and thunder in the distance. This song is climbing up my rankings quickly.

Then I listened to Seven O Clock while sitting in the sand and watching the sunset over the water. It’s probably in my top 3 or 4 on the album now. Both these songs are so beautiful.

oh I definitely think the last two albums were BoB making *choices* - everything sounds very calculated and drips with an agenda that completely gets PJ wrong as a band; BoB didn't do that because he's uninspired, he didn't shove his keyboard onto the last song of LB because he's lazy; he thought he could make PJ famous again with the AOR crowd so mixed them like Lady Antebellum, and make fat stacks of cash
