I think the only problem with the album is the sequencing and the later tendency of the band to separate their moods, so what do you think of:

1. Who Ever Said
2. Superblood Wolfmoon
3. Quick Escape
4. Alright
5. Seven O'Clock
6. Never Destination
7. Take the Long Way
8. Buckle Up
9. Comes Then Goes
10. Dance of the Clairvoyants
11. River Cross
12. Retrograde

The first half is super strong, so it can prescind of Dance, instead we put it in a later slot, the half that is in desparately needs of some energy infusion.

River Cross is lovely, but it suffers from the obligatory height of the "last song" on the album, in this case, we give it space to breath and to be something else, automatically it becomes a better track.

Then, we have Retrograde, the worst song on Gigaton, it doesnt help that its being sandwiched between two slow/acoustic tracks and doesnt really shines, except for it secret weapon, its coda, perfect to concludes the album with some grandiloquence. This slot also gives the song an epilogue quality so you can forgive the cheesyness.

I would totally move Dance down towards the end of the album to deliver that special knock out punch before wrapping things up

I'm really really really impressed listening how much this does NOT sound like S/T, Backspacer, Lightning Bolt, despite what the reviews said. Some parts of it do, no doubt...

But it's almost like a love letter to their entire history......

Quick Escape is early 90s Dave A Pearl Jam, Who Ever Said and SBWM is an extension of the 2010s PJ sound, Alright reminds me of Late 90s, Seven O Clock sort of like the early 00's at parts. Got EV solo stuff like River Cross...

Then there's stuff like Dance of the Clairvoyants and Buckle Up which sounds like nothing they've ever done before.

It's really solving the issue I had in the last albums that it didn't sound like Pearl Jam. So what do they do? They put out an album that takes all of their various sounds, modernizes it, and then branches out with more.

Its an album that can't be grouped with any others because it encompasses all of them.

I can't tell if I'm overblowing it but I feel like there's a lot more to love here than Lightning Bolt by far!

I dunno how Quick Escape could be anything but 94-esque Pearl Jam. Reminds me of Alone or Breath.

Comes then Goes does have some No Code vibes though it reminds me most of parting ways mixed with a bit of thin air.

Never Destination is the Who cover band Pearl Jam

I bet you would have taken "two 5 star songs plus three 4 star songs" for this new release if offered it a few months ago. I know I would have.

I'd rate WES and 7O'clock slightly higher but otherwise my evaluation is identical to yours.

06. Never Destination
07. Take the Long Way

Fuck yeah. I'm happy with this album and there's really only 3 tracks that don't really please me direction wise and they're WES, SBWM and ND. RC is a bit of a mess too.
Lounge Lizard wrote: I'd rate WES and 7O'clock slightly higher but otherwise my evaluation is identical to yours.
WES has that satisfaction line that grates on me melodically. 7oC is growing.
