Interesting to keep an eye on the Metracritic score for Gigaton. 81 so far which is close to the highest any PJ album has received but of course it could drop after album release as more reviews come in.

Pitchfork haven't reviewed it yet - that'll certainly drag it down.

This quote from Mike from the original album announcement is really interesting now that we have context for how the album was made: “Making this record was a long journey,” explains Mike McCready. “It was emotionally dark and confusing at times, but also an exciting and experimental road map to musical redemption. Collaborating with my bandmates on Gigaton ultimately gave me greater love, awareness and knowledge of the need for human connection in these times."oneway23 wrote:That's a great point. Instead of making early decisions about songs and styles based on what sounded good in a room with the band, they were experiencing the developing songs as recordings, evaluating ideas on record first and sometimes not even knowing how the same pieces would behave together in a live setting…maybe for the first time ever.
Makes me wonder if he missed that aspect of being in a room with the whole band to make a record.

If they don't dick around I think they could write about 4 good songs a year using this new process.Antelope wrote:This quote from Mike from the original album announcement is really interesting now that we have context for how the album was made: “Making this record was a long journey,” explains Mike McCready. “It was emotionally dark and confusing at times, but also an exciting and experimental road map to musical redemption. A lot of reviews don’t give out scores so Metacritic is a little funky.
Also, a B+ only being an 83 goes against everything I learned in school.

Some really lovely super intelligent people here among us.
Please stop worrying about reviews
Negative or positive. It undoes everything you’ve contributed yourself.
They mean nothing except It’s in a format you can wipe your ass with. It doesn’t make it any more legitimate than anyone’s if that’s the only use it actually has.

Mike might be an elegant quotesmith, but, he's no McPMcParadigm wrote:“Experimental road map to musical redemption” is an exquisite summary
We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

I interpreted that "darkness" as being about their split with BoB, who is essentially a friend, and the decision to start the project againAnders wrote:That quote could really go either way.Antelope wrote:This quote from Mike from the original album announcement is really interesting now that we have context for how the album was made: “Making this record was a long journey,” explains Mike McCready. “It was emotionally dark and confusing at times, but also an exciting and experimental road map to musical redemption.
