I now feel as if Backspacer and Lightning Bolt kind of represent an experiment to work through "new" parts and elements to a maturer sound, rather than a whole Pearl Jam; they play around (with mixed success) with fun and brightness, "friendliness" instead of bleakness, pop elements in the production and instrumentation; those elements don't start to become fully integrated into a complete PJ sound until this album, which sprinkles those into what we knew and loved about them before

I still don't understand what happened between Can't Deny Me and this album, the difference in (production AND song) quality is staggering. Having listened to this album consistently over the past few days I feel more and more confident it is one of their best yet. Interesting to me that it's an album that they probably could never have come up with 20+ years ago, but an album only a group hungry to prove something and make something interesting could create. Pretty amazing.

Enjoying Buckle Up more and more with each listen too, really sticking with me, what a great way to split the album. Can someone tell me what part of the vocal is Stone's? Surely not all of it?

A couple of the band members swing by here to read, from time to time. As they do with the Pit.

It's usually after releasing certain products, tracks, previews, tours, etc. They like to gauge some of the reactions.

CDM was me with a significant negative response. It caused the band to step back and review the scope of the album - which at the time was pending mastering and release.

The went "back to the drawing board" so to speak.

Josh Evans talks about starting this record in januari 2017. In their own GT studios (Warehouse). CDM was released about a year later in march 2018 citing BO'B as a producer. So somewhere along the line Josh became the producer. Im really curious about the timeline here. What was already recorded with BO'B before march 2018? It seems that only 1 or 2 (retrogade was mentioned) come from BO'B helmed sessions. What happened with BO'B? Everyone assumes the band stopped working with him. However it seems that he hasn''t produced any records since 2017!! He did the Prophets of Rage one and a Mastodon record, and that's it for the last 3 years!

So, Im starting to think that the band didnt quit BO'B, but B'OB quit the music industry...

It's just my theory from the snippets i've read. Timelines make sense. It's been stated that one of the parties wanted BO'B specifically as producer of the next SG album, a view that wasn't shared by 3 other members. Again, it's out there. It may come down to conflict of interest.

Hadn't thought much about it. I'd prefer to be optimistic and stay ignorant in my bubble, believing that the band finally got wise and realized that he hasn't been a decent producer in two decades.

He's a coat-tail rider who constantly breaks the cardinal producer's rule: He's the insufferable type of producer who refers to the band as we, as though he's actually a member of the band he is producing instead of an admittedly talented, though ultimately failed, musician who fell into the job. Listen to interviews for the tell-tale signs; you'll hear gems like, "on this album, WE tried to", "WE were going for." It's unbearable to me.

Just do the job, make the actual BAND shine, instead of trying to impose your way into it. Just take your producer's points and go home.

Lest anyone thing I'm being harsh, he's been doing it since early on....check the credits on the Black Crowe's debut. The guy played a ton of instruments on there.

I don't know for sure what the deal was with everything, alot of mud is being slung from one side, and it sucks, because one voice isn't here to speak. From what I'm reading about one of these songs, it all makes sense.

Now, let's hope I can get this thing at 9 pm tonight, because not having heard it is totally painful.

B'OB or no B'OB this band went from thinking Cant Deny Me (which I still think is fine and actually pretty fun live) would be part of an album to releasing what is possibly a masterpiece, or at least a very very good album. It's pretty amazing.

Jealous of everyone listening to the album for the first time tonight / tomorrow, hope the hype doesn't impact your own opinion too much. Enjoy!

Listen BOB might not have been the right guy for the last few albums but I'm not going to rewrite history and pretend like he wasn't masterful at what he did in the '90s and early 2000s.

I explicitly said in the post that he hasn't been a good producer in two decades. The implication there, of course, is that, at one point, he was.
Me voicing a personal opinion on his resume since, or his approach to his job, is a quite a far throw from re-writing history or claiming that he's always been crap at producing records.
