It's like...in some ways, this might be the album with the most love put into it since Ten.
I don't think it's their second best album, but I DO think they have never done an album since Ten where every song is this worth listening to. In Ten that's due to consistency. In this it's actually variety. A lot of their albums are full of filler tracks. I don't think there's much of any on this album. Not since Ten can I say that (or maybe, arguably Vs.). They do experiment with different sounds on No Code but I don't think that every song on No Code is as successful in its genre as the ones on this album at all. Yield, Binaural, Riot Act all have a ton of throwaway tracks. Are any of them as fully formed as these?
I mean...I prefer the sound of those earlier albums. They were better in terms of a lot of things...but in terms of strictly the songwriting, I think this is maybe their most consistent and interesting since Ten.
That does NOT make it the best, but I dunno...can any other album compare there?
for that, there's Vs. and Riot Act

Bump because I’m selfish, and I was hoping for a little more convo.Ms Harmless wrote:yep yep yepPHATJ wrote:I believe that with all my heart. Gigaton absolutely belongs with the best of PJ, and I think that includes everything from Ten - Riot Act. How people rank those albums is all about taste, mood, experience, etc. But each of these albums can legitimately be dissected and applauded on their merits and also thoroughly enjoyed by the listener. I’m not sure any legitimate argument can be made for the other three, though I generally enjoy S/T.Ms Harmless wrote:this is absolutely rightPHATJ wrote:

I don't know. To me, Do the Evolution, Wishlist, and Given to Fly are the obvious standouts. I also really enjoy Low Light. But the rest of the album while good doesn't seem to be top-level. All Those Yesterdays is very good as well. In Hiding too, though a step below those others. The other half of the album seems a step below that.Ms Harmless wrote:Yield is amazing, I don't usually skip anything on it, but I'm not as wild about it as some on herePHATJ wrote:That’s Yield and Vs. for me.Ms Harmless wrote:Vitalogy is my favourite, but I don't go to it for an entirely comfortable no-skips playthroughmikejasond wrote:You know. Pilate, Push Me Pull Me, MFC sort of especially stand out as throwaway tracks or fillery experimentation. And that's not even including Red Dot.
I don't think it's a bad album, it's a good album, but I still think each individual song on Gigaton shows more love than these, or creativity in a successful way. (Pilate is creative but I don't find it that successful. Not bad, just underwhelming).
I can definitely see saying you LIKE Yield better than Gigaton, or that it IS better than Gigaton. But Superblood Wolfmoon is a song I like less than most of the Yield songs, yet I think that it comes off as bigger/more important than most of the Yield songs because it got so much love, even just the little touches like that section coming out of the bridge that was in the preview (and Id say its one of the weakest songs on this album and the most cuttable).
I don't know how to word it but I just don't think there's been a Pearl Jam album POSSIBLY since Ten where every track feels this worth listening to. We probably have Josh to thank for this honestly because its probably mostly production that makes every song sound so IMPORTANT. There's a gravity to each one that calls for your attention. In fact, that is sort of how Ten felt too, even if in a totally different way.

Despite being a huge huge tom waits fan, pearl jam's 'weirder' side never did all that much for me - at least compared to the rest of their music. But Alright, Buckle Up, River Cross, and especially Dance all really hit it out of the park. 4 great songs, and one quite possible top 20 all timer![]()
PS Is it now time to fully admit that I quite like the song Lightning Bolt?

Maybe what I'm reacting to is a similar spirit to Ten where every song seems to think it's one of the most important songs on the album and demands you treat it as such.
