This album is exactly what we needed right now.

that's a very well-written review
erlewine gets it!
2,5 stars for Yield, 4 for Lightning Bolt, 4 for Gigaton. He's clueless on an endless amount of albums.

But the rest of the album while good doesn't seem to be top-level. All Those Yesterdays is very good as well. In Hiding too, though a step below those others. The other half of the album seems a step below that.

Pilate, Push Me Pull Me, MFC sort of especially stand out as throwaway tracks or fillery experimentation. And that's not even including Red Dot.

I don't think it's a bad album, it's a good album, but I still think each individual song on Gigaton shows more love than these, or creativity in a successful way. (Pilate is creative but I don't find it that successful. Not bad, just underwhelming).

I can definitely see saying you LIKE Yield better than Gigaton, or that it IS better than Gigaton. But Superblood Wolfmoon is a song I like less than most of the Yield songs, yet I think that it comes off as bigger/more important than most of the Yield songs because it got so much love, even just the little touches like that section coming out of the bridge that was in the preview (and Id say its one of the weakest songs on this album and the most cuttable).

I don't know how to word it but I just don't think there's been a Pearl Jam album POSSIBLY since Ten where every track feels this worth listening to. We probably have Josh to thank for this honestly because its probably mostly production that makes every song sound so IMPORTANT. There's a gravity to each one that calls for your attention. In fact, that is sort of how Ten felt too, even if in a totally different way.

Except that he forgot Brain of J even exists :shake:
Can't see Faithfull mentioned.

Spoiler: show
including brain of J would have been acceptable

We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

One of the reasons why the quality of Gigaton is so shocking despite all the positive reviews is that these same reviewers, as others have pointed out, ranked LB very highly too.

It's more likely you are a creation of my subconscious mind. Which means I created Backspacer.

Lightning Bolt is a decent bunch of songs produced, arranged and performed badly

The surprising thing about the response to this album is that even the modern-PJ haters on the board seem to like some or most of it.

So it's actually a logical extension of Avocado, not Backspacer.

Ok newb questions here.

1) Where are you buying hi-res music?

2) Are there portable music devices people recommend that can handle hi-res?

1) Qobuz

2) I'm no audiophile, I'm just listening on my phone (with headphones)

I'm seeing a lot of "this is the best album since . . . " and it's mostly followed by either s/t or riot act. I like this new album a lot, but i attribute these statements less to the quality of this album and more to the abject failures of the last 2 albums.

put another way, these statements aren't saying anything at all.

I just perused through the Lightning Bolt thread.

Kind of funny. It was 1,300 pages of anticipation and excitement but once the album was released around Mid October, there was little to no posting. Just dropped off.

RM died that day.
