We still make records to be listened to — not that everyone will listen to a record track one to twelve in a row or side A or Side B — but we still make 'em in case somebody does want to listen to it like that, that's how we make em…

"I just gave up on labeling things verses or choruses"

Pearl Jam were *always* at their best when they did that; they started getting shoved into a more palatable formula and they no longer sounded like themselves

The SBWM write up makes me appreciate the chaos of the song much more.

Nothing open near me to go purchase the CD today... unless it's available at Walmart or Target. Does anyone know? I usually go purchase the CD (this year I'm getting vinyl ... already ordered) at a local record store. No luck this time around. Let me know if you're having any luck at one of the big boxes that may still be open.

That section before the first solo, I imagine that as the rocket taking off. Stone does that first solo. He came in one day and played it plugged straight into ProTools with no amp. He was like, eh, that’s cool, but go ahead and mess with it. I wanted it to sound like an army of robotic bees crossed with the strings from Britney Spears’ “Toxic.” That’s what I was thinking (laughs).
 Love it!

Great interview with amazing insights. Probably my favorite article so far.

His description of making Retrograde was in such stark contrast to how all of the other songs were built. It kind of makes sense how the song sounds in comparison to the others. From interviews mike has given, he’s not a confident songwriter, especially in the context of Pearl Jam. Seems like he obsessed over it and made it much more complicated than it should have been. Interesting write up compared to Alright or Comes Then Goes, when the songwriter brought it in and didn’t tinker too much.

There’s a great Thelonious Monk quote: don’t put all the music in the song. Let some of it happen in the audience’s mind. In the flow of the record up to this point, you’ve had all these tempos and sounds. This gives you a break. Sonically, it’s simple, but emotionally, it is very complex.

Yeah, this pretty terrific. I'm hit or miss with Matt writing for PJ, this one's a keeper. Well, those are Ed's words, but the song itself I'm speaking too

That part of the song he's referencing has always stood out as really cool and innovative. The fact that he's enough of an open-minded producer/music fan to even consider that is amazing

Seeing a lot of this "the first time" and "first or second take" ... really reminds me of how quickly Ten was recorded. :heartbeat:
